I am installing a used Gooseneck hitch in my 2001 quad cab shortbed 4x4. Does anyone know where the ball should be located?? RIght above the axle? slightly forward?? If forward how much?

Thanks

Dan

If your using reese rails it will be about 2" in front of the axle, but the key factor is where you have to drill and your bed supports,if you use 2 rails you can switch between 5Th wheel and ball, some balls hitches just have a plate under the bed,if you going to be drilling the frame, becarefull of wires, brake lines, and the fuel tank, very easy to mess up. .

It will depend upon which manufacture you use, all will be just a little bit different, they will all try and use existing holes within the frame. I have a B&W and it is nearly 5" ahead of the rear axle.

I would definitely contact the manufacturer or at least try to find the instruction manual for that particular model. On my last truck (2500) with a different manufacturer it was actually behind the axle. On the 3500 it is slightly ahead of the axle.

It depends on your setup too. Undermount or other wise... ... I now use rails that are accessable from inside the bed so I can easily switch between 5th wheel and gooseneck.

I would certainly do some more reasearch before you drill. You may be able to find a manual for your specific model online if you can find the manufacturer and model number. I know most of the manufacturers sites have their manuals in PDF format for download in case the users misplace or lose the original installer and user manuals.
