gooseneck hitch

Hey all,

I read somewhere in a past TDR mag of a neat sounding hitch. It was primarily a gooseneck set-up but could be used with a 5th wheel that could be bought with it. It was suppose to be a "no rails" set-up. I haven't a clue how that would work but it sounds neat. I can't find the article/add again though . Does anyone know what I'm talking about? It was not the 5th wheel set up that could mount a gooseneck ball.

I'm in the market for a gooseneck hitch now and thought that that would be neat if it would really work. Primarily I'll always be hitched to a gooseneck but thought it would be neat to have the option of being able to pull a 5th wheel just incase.

If not, if anyone knows of any good deals or has specific product suggestions on a flush mount pop-up ball set-up it would be appreciated. Thanks so much. -Justatruck

It is I believe the B&W turnover ball. They also sell$$ a companion hitch to make it a fifith wheel. IMHO these are a compromise. If fifth wheel towing is what you do all the time then get a good fifth wheel with removable rails. I do not know who makes them but all that is left is four holes for the pins. I think that setup also has a gooseneck instead of the fifth wheel platform. Uses the same holes. so it is swappable. I have the B&W and I do like it. It is not a totally free floor. The runaway chain loops dent sheetrock in the bed. They stick up about 1/4 to 3/8". For goosneck towing they are the best (IMHO).

If you tow both it is a comromise to get the companion hitch. Those that use it know a trick to pre-load it so it does not surge back and forth. I have no fiver so I don't know if it is a real problem.

Do a search for " B&W "and one for "companion hitch ". Also go to the B&W website. The TDR strings will give you some cheaper alternatives, and link/references to the other styles/vendors. Good luck.

Thanks for the replies gentlemen. Now I have a few search leads. Thanks especially for pointing out that the eyelets still stick up. Neat ideas they've got there. Kind of a reciever mount 'stick what ever in there and pin it'. That 5th wheel is $$$ though, since I was thinking of that mostly for doing 'favors' maybe I'll just be happy with knowing that I have that option in the future. Thanks again- Justatruck

If you have a plastic liner, the chain loops shouldn't be a problem. The ribs from the liner are about the same height.
