since i have my 2nd gen cummins and have done lots of work to it i have been elected cummins expert against my experience, the guy that does some towing for our yard has a real early 250 that cold starts instantly and runs good but kicks back against the starter while cranking warm, i've not witnessed the cold start or good running down the road but did see it pop back a couple times in a row on hot starts, any ideas? after a couple trys it will start with no throttle or anything but it's going to either shave the teeth off the ring gear or blow up the new starter if left alone, i've never really had to do much to ve pumps on bmws and volvos and don't have the tools to check the timing, also do the 1st gen motors suffer from the kdp as well so i know if i need to warn him?

There's only one reason for starter kickback whether it be gasoline or diesel. Timing is too far advanced. You'll want that corrected immediately before even trying to start it again. Too much advance can lead to all sorts of problems, all of which are fatal to the entire engine.

Is the starter spinning fast enough? Mine will tend to kick back if the battery is low, and not spinning the engine over fast enough. I'd have to think that it would be rattling worse then a 24valve if the timing was so far advanced that it would kick back hot, but the above is right. Too much timing and it would cause kick back. Also a ve has a key in the gear, so it is less prone to jump timing unless the nut gets loose.

I wonder about the starter contacts, if they are worn causing a hot starter to not spin up fast enough???

i figured it was timing, it has a new not rebuilt starter and spins quickly till it bucks, someone suposidly rebuilt the pump and only god knows where it is, i thought they were key'd but it's been a while since i even seen a diesel volvo/bmw (ve pump also) and couldn't remember, as for noise it's way quieter then my p7100 at 16. 5* night and day, doesn't even sound like the same engine that's why i was a little unsure about the timing
