I bought my 97 back... I couldn't help it. The owner made me an offer I couldn't refuse.
the truck: white single cab 2wd 5sp stripper model. when I had it I made 436/950 to the wheels w/ 370's, an HX40, and 12. 5* timing (kid I bought it from said it was at 16... after dynoing low, I checked it and bumped it to 16. 5)
buddy I sold it to put a new radiator in it, rebuilt fully splined transmission, head studs and new gasket, 3rd gen chrome steelies w/ like-new 265's
buddy he sold it to put a 13. 25" SBC FE clutch in it, he lost the turbo and put an sps62 on it, then he lost the rear u-joint (the bolts on one side were backed out, I don't know if they backed out because of vibration or if the clutch installer didn't get them tight enough?), parked the truck, head unit got stolen, dash is trashed, he just got tired of it
I tried to inspire him to get the driveshaft situation fixed up and get it back on the road, but he was just through messing w/ the truck, it's got 280k on it, has a good amount of blowby (no more than when it made 436rwhp, it always blew-by from the day I bought it ) the head is cracked around the #1 and #2 exhuast port ears, there isn't a straight body panel on it, etc. He sold the sps to get some money back out of it and it just sat.
He offered it to me for $2500 delivered to my door! How do you turn that down?
you don't!
I've been fighting the rain trying to get it together... I scored a good driveshaft and got that in place, I had a Dodgezilla hybrid laying around that I pulled off of my '98. Mike at Hot Rod Diesel hooked me up with a downpipe, v-band clamp and some misc bolts and fittings I needed.
Today I busted out the welder and re-welded the cross-box mounts for the stacks in the bed. Then I said F-it, covered up the turbo hose, scored up the cracks in the head, cranked up the heat and set the speed a little below half on my little Miller 135 and welded them up! "Hmm... it's burning away some of the cast iron... it's gotta be getting SOME penetration, right?" :-laf
Originally I planned on pulling the injection lines and injectors to get a better angle, but I held the gun down in there (AFTER hacking off the front lift bracket with the sawzall) and was like "yeah, I can do this"
I've got an HTT Pro-Street 66 on the way, and the plan is to take the dragon flies out of my work truck, put some DDP4's in it, and put the DF's in the little 97 and bump the timing to 20 or so. gonna see if I can get 575 out of it on fuel
I smell a short-bed conversion before spring... the bed is the worst part of the whole truck, so why not replace it w/ a smaller one,r ight?
then I'll sell off a couple 5sp swap setups and put that towards a built auto. Oo.
