Took my steering gearbox out yesterday and it drained all the oil out of the steering pump unit. Had to drive it dry fro about 5 miles till I got to the store to gets some pump fluid. Breaks were spongy but still had them. But when I started it up last night before I left the shop after my alignment my airbag light came on and I got a P1596 code which means:

(Chrysler/Dodge/Plymouth P1596 Speed control muxed switch input above maximum acceptable voltage)

What does this have to do with the air bag light?

Also how many times does the vehicle have to start to reset a code if it will?

2001 Service Manual states:

Possible causes:

Speed control switch ground circuit open.

Speed control switch wiring harness intermittent.

Speed control on/off switch.

Signal control switch signal circuit open.

Powertrain control module.

Clock spring.

Speed control signal circuit shorted to voltage.

This is for the P1596 code for Speed control switch always high.

Your speed control wiring runs through the clock spring. I would think some of the wires are shorted together inside the clock spring so the air bag light has come on. Hope this helps.
