Wow this thing rocks!Oo. I can almost feel this huge and heavy truck lift off the ground when I get on at on 4th and 5th gear. :) However, I’ve noticed a little pinging of the docile and quiet 3rd gen CR engine when accelerating (sounds like a gasser that is overheating or the timing is a few degrees advanced). I know the odd # means timing is advanced and maybe that is what I’m hearing? Since this is my daily driver, will running of the Smarty on this SW 3 indefinitely hurt the engine? Also, I’ve noticed tonight after my 200 mile return trip from Monterey bay to Sacramento when I idled the truck for a minute to cool the turbo, I’ve noticed a little knocking sound coning from the engine. I don’t think the knocking was there before I loaded the Smarty. I might try to go back to stock and see if it goes away. Has anyone have any experiences with the pinging and knocking? What is the procedure for returning the Smarty to stock? Thanks all.

My truck is definitely louder with the Smarty then without.

I have been running it now for about 16k miles without any problems.

I have a digital dB meter so I will take a stock vs SW #3 readings at idle and at varius speed once I bring it back to stock.

I had a much noisier idle with my Smarty on #1 & #3. That along with too much smoke caused me to return it to stock. I'm hopeful that the new updates will address these issues. It sure does run great with the Smarty.

Make sure you give exact positioning and weighting/response of the settings of your DB meter. A few inches can make a huge difference because of the inverse square law.

johncameron, I am not an a sound engineer by any stretch of the imagination. I am open to any suggestion on how to get it done correctly. I was just going to measure as follows:

1. At idle hood closed directly in front of the grill 12” the Ram emblem.

2. At idle hood open 12” directly above the oil fill cap.

3. At idle hood closed dB meter sitting on the front middle seat. Will also do this same measurement @ 60 mph.

Will continued running on advance timing be detrimental to the engine? I would think it will be unhealthy to the engine to run this much timing to hear a diesel “ping”. Opinion please.

I think the pinging is the timing "rattle" also. When I run the Smarty on #1 or #3 it rattles more, and I can make it go away completely with stock or #2 (no timing). It also idles a little louder with #1 or #3, but I love #3 because it gives me good power and I've gained about 2 mpg! I think the noise has toned down some since I've been using 2-stroke oil in my fuel also. By the way, my truck is a 2003 HO.

If you run a modified injector stock turbo program, it won't rattle nearly as bad.

What would that program do? Is the timing advance not that much? Will it work with my stock injectors? I wish there was a list that breaks down what each program will do.

Yes, there isn't as much timing added. Yes, it will work, my injectors are stock, it's been almost a year since I got mine.
