First of all I must say I'm addicted to diesel... . as long as it its cummin' from a Cummins. I'm consider a fueling upgrade here soon, I'm curious what you guys think I'd be happy with. Would I like a box (what brand) or should I get injectors? Which is a better upgrade for the money? How much would I be spending on injectors? What brand? Too much stuff out there. I dont want to go overboard (yet). I like what I've heard from Banks. T hey told me their box will drop power to stock levels at the shift point. Which as you know is better to the transmission. Curious Confused Rookie, who does'nt know who to trust. I know I post a lot I hope ypu guys don't get sick of me!!!:) It seems I can't wait to get home so I can log on to TDR... my wife says I like you guys more than her I tell her at least you guys like to talk diesel:D

i have noticed everyone has a different opinion on performance upgrades . i had banks powerpack and still had to build a trans. original trans lasted about 5000 miles before the converter started to chatter. i have also been reading in the TDR website you can get as good of performance for less money from other vendors. recc. lots of reading before purchase

I stopped into Diesel Dynamics here in Vegas after work today. They were giving me BOMBING 101 as I am a newbie myself.

What's cool is they wanted to hook up a box to my truck right on the spot for a test drive so I could see how a 50HP (Claimed) would really feel on my own truck. I was short on time so I took a rain check but if you have a shop similiar to DD around your area maybe they would offer you test time like DD did for me.

Another thing is they explained how injectors will mirror stock HP curves from bottom to top (albeit w/more HP) and how the electronic boxes can be "tuned" to produce more power in specific areas.

I'm still green as can be to the world of diesels but having the TDR and a cool local shop to get info from is making the learning curve MUCH smaller.

Good Luck!

Down pour is emminent...

smokin joes 400,

I agree with RADdodge statement on getting guages first. Being that you have an auto... You need to start researching for a performance transmission shop before any real horsepower upgrades. Yes it will be the most expensive upgrade you do. However, when it comes to horsepower these same shops have mass experience with performance upgrades. Example: Stock my truck ran the quarter in the 18 sec time frame. With a 91%DDT, DD2's, Comp drag and a Pdr Hx35 I was running 14 flat. The golden rule still applies here. How fast you go depends on how much your willing to spend.

First I went from a V10 to the Cummins. I'm ashamed to say how much I poured in the V10! My truck now is a 2002. 5 3500 4x4, 4. 10 auto.

Got sick of blowing trans on the V10 (NV4500) I do all my own work and have a great dealer, does everything under warranter no matter what I do.

I do it in stages to check performance. First I added Super Chip, very very happy. Then AFE Air induction, more noise, power?? I doubt it. Cowl induction hood to keep things cool, it really helps. Exhaust tomorrow, injectors on Sat. I bought a lot of stuff new on e-bay.

Have all the gauges and stuff in the garage. I like to stock up and then start working. Right now truck has 9500 miles on it.

more hp

Yup, opinions are like noses (or other unmentionable body parts as it was said to me) - everyone has one.

Stating that up front, I would not upgrade the engine until you do something with the auto trans. At the very least, install the gaget from BD, I think, that fools the transmission into increasing the pressure to the lockup clutch at lower throttle positions. In my opinion, the stock transmission is just barely up to the task with a stock engine, let alone one with more power. I started out with just an injector upgrade (RV injectors from TST) and right away started having lockup slippage.

Talk to ATS, DTT and Dave Goerend. Any of these would be a big improvement over stock. I went with ATS and never regreted it.

At this time I have the Edge Comp too and am happy with it. If I were to do it again, I probably would start out with the box before the injectors.

If you upgrade the engine and the transmission you will litteraly be driving a different truck - unbelievable difference!!!

Stock sucks - bombing rocks... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... .

I agree with the statement above,

Stock sucks!

I would buy and Edge EZ or VA box, next guages, BHAF filter.

Next step upgrading your Auto transmission, I went with ATS and it has been great, you'll wonder why you ever drove a stock transmission in the first place!

Next I would Install some injectors, start small like 275's and see how you like your mileage, then a bigger fueling box like an Edge Comp(Timing built in), Blue Chip FMS (EZ compatible), or TST powermax3(EZ compatible).

It never ends.

I'd go with the transmission mod first. I step on it and wait, and wait, and wait then the TC locks up and then finally WEEEEEEEE!!!! Drove A friends truck with the same moter mods but a good TC and WOW what a diference. Night and day. :D :D :D

Where is the best place to buy the Edge EZ? Question being not neccessarily the cheapest but who will stand behind the product should you have questions or problems.

Try Piers for a good price on the EZ. BTW, after I installed my gauges, the first bomb for HP was the EZ. It wasn't too much for the auto and was a fun & easy upgrade. Naturally, I didn't leave it at that! :D But the EZ was EZ and fun. If you decide to upgrade later, you can always sell the EZ after you upgrade the Auto and move on to bigger, better, costlier, la de da... ;)

Smoking joes, you need to upgrade the trans, dont believe banks when they tell you it will hold up. It wont hold up,you need to get that done. If your short on funds you can raise the line pressure 2 turns on the transmission when you service it,and run an edge EZ. I would buy the edge comp, and run it with the pump wire off, after the trans is done, hook it up . For 100 more $$ the comp adds the ability to tune the low speed fueling on the fly,and the abiltiy to add about 90 more hp (at 2700RPM) than the EZ alone. As for injectors they can only be added after the trans work, unless you go with 275's they can be used alone with a stock trans.
