Kentucky to Washington in December

Hi All,

I need to move a car from Kentucky to Washington state some time in the next 2-3 weeks. I know there are some companies that specialize in this but I figured I'd post and ask for some advice. I've heard some scary stories about some of these outfits and am not sure which one to pick. Any comments welcome and appreciated.

I think the best advise I can give you is what not to do as I have been out of the car hauling loop for a few years, Anyway, This is something that you you get what you pay for. If you go on the net and get the lowest price you can find your car might sit along time befor someone will hual it. Most car hauling companies on the net dont own anything. They dont have anything to loose by telling you what you need to hear for them to get your car. Repeat buissness is almost non existant when it comes to car shipping. Try to aviod at all costs having the car spend any time at a terminal. expect to pay 800-1200 bux depending on size of car. Dont **** off the driver if you can. The driver has nothing to do with what ever delay your car has regaurdless of what a shipper tells you. If you can find a small mom and pop company with trucks and DOT auth that have a websight I would go with them . Most companies give the impression that they own equipment or have high standards for there transporters. Its just a line . If the place you want the car picked up is not accessable by truck then you will have to make arrangments for that. The door to door service is simply a line of crap. If you live in downtown san Francisco and nothing bigger than a small tow truck can get to you your cars will be dropped off at a terminal and redelivered. No one can make a truck fly or become smaller in order to get your car to your front door. Take a good look at the car before you ship it. Wash it and stand a couple of feet away from each panel and look at that panel for awial then move to the next one. Most people only look at there car when thay buy it and after its shipped. they are convinced that it has become scratched when its been that way for a long time. If you can afford it have it shipped in an enclosed trailer. If you have to go with an open trailer try to get the car on top or have a one level trailer. Make sure they give you proof of cargo ins. IF the car is to be C. O. D dont leave a check with a freind or try to get out of paying with cash . The only thing that will happen is the driver will take your car to terminal where it will get locked behind a gate and the only way to get it out will be with cash. They will charge fees that you never heard of like proccessing fee, gate fee, after hours fee, handleing fee, weekend and weekend afterhours fee. If you tell them you will sue them they will hand you a buisness card and piont you to the courthouse. . There is nothing you can do that they havent seen almost everyday. the contracts are long with fine print and its all on there side. Most big terminals have a few very expensive cars that have been at them for years. I wish I could give you the name of a small time owner op that goes out there . Not much comes out of washington state comming back to the midwest. Alot of guys dont want to run out there in the winter. best of luck

Otis,

I'm not planning to ship a car but I enjoyed reading your informative post. I believe you provided a very accurate description of what a shipper can expect and good advice for preparing and protecting himself.

Thanks for a good post.

Otis,

That's some pretty solid advice. An outfit called Advantage Auto Transport was recommended and I did a Yahoo search to see if they had a website and the first thing to come up was a post about someone getting ripped off by them. It looks like they're likely one of the outfits you mention above. I was thinking about getting it shipped terminal to terminal since it would likely be cheaper and it would get handled fewer times. It's just the wife's Ford Focus, nothing fancy and maybe if I had more time I'd sell it here and buy another car in Wa but I think buying used cars is a bigger crap shoot then shipping one.

wcjp, I'll join the NW Bombers and put up a post, I certainly hadn't thought of that. I keep meaning to join anyway but never seem to have time to do much as it is.

Thanks for the info.

Mike.

I have a friend that does this for a living He is hired out to passport trensport, they are a div. of fed ex. this is allthey do and they do it for the rich and famous all the tine , give Fed Ex a call and ask about it Don

Pictures! I would recomend taking several photo's from different angles before you ship it. If you do get into a damage suit, haveing before & after photo's would really help. Just a thought. P.

Most guys I know that haul them are pretty careful to take pix of all sides of everything they pick up. Especially if it's not in showroom new condition. Sorry, but nobody I know runs North West, this time of year. Anybody with a trailer would like to have a couple units in and out. I'll send your query to a friend and he may know someone looking to fill out.

Cheers,

OTR PU
