Been searchin the forums for awhile tonight looking for the how-to's on the governor lever adjustment. The only references I've found so far are to Piers website. The explanation on Piers site is good... I understand the concept... although not real sure how to get the job done starting from cold. Does anyone know of any other explanations on the job that would amplify Piers expanation?

For example... I can't imagine getting a cover off the back of the pump to find the adjusting nut Piers description mentions.

Any extra info you fellas have is appreciated,

Dennis,

Can I ask what you were watching when you made the adjustment. I assume I have to pull off the AFC housing to see the relationship between the governor lever and the #6 plate nose. Then just feel for the lower drivers side adjusting bolt.

Does this sound about right?

Thanks,

Gill

Its not any easy job but well worth it ,you will need a small mirror to see into the back of the pump a 3in round spot mirrow works great and you will have to remove the AFC housing, the hardest part for me was trying to get the screws out that hold on the plate on the back of the pump its a little tight, I finally had to use a small pair of vise grips to get them off.

I did the same. I also pulled the fuel filter off. You need patience to do the adjustment. :)

Be real careful when adjusting the screw. A quarter or half turn makes a noticeable difference. Also, be real careful if you're backing out the screw that it doesn't come completely out. That didn't happen to me but it did to a friend of mine. He had to go fishing for it in the bottom of the pump with a magnet.

The 2 screws holding the plate on are a pain. Use a right-angle screw driver. Also, they are safety wired, as I remember. Prepare to cut!

Remember to check the lever contact to the plate with the run lever (pulled up by the solenoid) in the up (run) position.

just to add to what i and others said above- i did the adjustment (yeah, what a pain- had to remove the fuel filter). i did it, but i ound out over time that i didn't tighten the adjustment screw just enough. after about 5000 miles or so, the nut, screw, and lock washer vibrated out. it bent 1 side of the governor assembly rendering the springs useless on one side (it was idling at 1700rpms). needless to say the marine pump i have on now... . tighten the nut good!
