soft ride springs???

put it in tonight along with a bunch of other stuff (put the head back on and put a fuel pin in). trucks been sitting outside in the bitter cold for the last month or so. brought it in last night so that it would have a good 24 hrs of 55*. was pretty hard to get started, and once it happened it ran AWFUL. wouldn't idle AT ALL. until i cranked the idle screw about 3/16 to a 1/4 inch! i had to shorten the throttle linkage all the way, and it was still too short. went for a short drive, and the old beast just didn't feel as snappy as she used to (although it has been a month). could this be caused by me not getting the the spring loaded thingy back in the correct place? that is all that i could come up with on the drive home. left the truck down at the shop and plugged 'er in. will try again tomorrow with some light.

thanks

dave

Sounds like you didn't index the throttle shaft correctly. If you get this off even one click, it won't idle without some help from the foot pedal. I did this on mine, and it was just off one click.

... . or air left in the pump... ...

Did you bleed it well? Did it operate well when you last left the truck a month ago? I'd be interested in knowing if it ran well then. I'm assuming so as your faced with this problem a month after you installed the spring. Sounds suspisious to me, like your not giving us all the datails... ... .....

I need to know more.

i bled it by priming the lift pump and filling the new filter and bumping it a number of times with the lines loose at the injectors. didn't install the spring a month ago, i pulled the head a month ago. got all the parts while working on the head and decided to put them in while i had easy access to the pump. so yesterday was when all the work was done. oh yeah, ran just fine before i pulled the head (famous last words  ).

all the details:

pulled the head for some port/ceramic coat work that didn't end up happening the way i'd hoped. somebody else was supposed to do it, but didn't. so I ended up hacking my way through some grinding.

while the head was off, i had the valves done. not too happy with the job the guy did, but oh well. also had . 011" taken off the face.

gov spring

piers fuel pin

all put in at the same time. and the more i think about it, the more i think i didn't index the thing right. just didn't think it would effect throttle response like that.

the other thing that troubled me was the smoke (very light) coming out of the dipstick tube after i drove it. i don't know. would oil congeal, or something, after sitting in temps as low as 0* for a month? anyway, lunch is over. thanks for the help guys.

I'm gonna go with the other guys here... . check the throttle shaft indexing... . a very common mistake and not a big deal... yes, you'll have to re-tweak your throttle rod etc but no biggie... :D

pb...

done deal. easy as pie. BOY OH BOY!! that was fun. i need to figger the air situation out SOON. saw 1600* for the first time  . before i even got to 5th!!! i like how she drives now though, i tell you what. the gov spring is nice.

oh yeah, one more question. where's the fuel heater?

thanks again for the help.

dave

that is probably another reason why it didn't do so well. i guess i put it on backwards (not upside down though) because the harness wouldn't reach. i will have to deal with that asap. does it just come on for starting? or does it cycle during normal operation?

Swank it's temp controlled by a sensor. Once the temp's hit a certain level it shuts down on it's own.

BTW, I recommend ALWAYS using an additive of one sort or another.

There are a number of good one's out there and they address all sorts of needs, but in cold weather you want something to deal with anti-gelling of fuel.

pb... .

i agree. i use howe's year round.

so say the outside temp is 0*, and you've been driving for an hour. will the fuel heater ever come on? since the fuel coming from the tank would be very cold. or is it more like a KSB kind of thing, starting only? not trying to pester ya, just want to make sure i understand. thanks for the info, i really appreciate it.

I'm not looking in my manual however, to my knowledge, all fuel heaters are on all the time. I have yet to see any that turn on/off according to the temps of the fuel.

I re-read your post and I'm getting it now... ... . you "just" installed the spring :) got it.

When I remove the throttle assy I mark the indexing tick marks with a fine white paint pen.

My 'local' diesel shop doesn't have much faith in Pier's gov spring. Was in there getting filters and some gaskets and talked to them about it. Said they built a pump for a guy and he wanted them to install it. Said they could get the pump to work better on the stand without the Pier's spring lol. Also said Scott, just send that pump back to me unassembled, and they will put it together the 'right' way, put it on the stand, do their stuff to it, all for $200! Sounds like a deal:D. I don't think they do much for us VE guys.
