6 liter "powerstroke" in cold weather

My police department got a goverment surplus chevy blazer diesel. It has 2 batteries wired for 24volts. The Alternator I believe is only putting out 14. 5 volts. Why the 24volts Should I rewire them for 12 volt operation. The Keep having to replace the second battery. What should I do.

Are you sure it has a 24 volt system? My guess is that it is a dual battery 12 volt system like our trucks.

I may be wrong.

I assume you are talking about a M1009 CUCV? If so, then the only thing 24 volt on it is the starter. They did this so that any NATO vehicle can start any other NATO vehicle. Everything else is 12 volt includnig the glow plugs. You will need to bypass the resistor on the firewall for the glowplug system though to convert to 12 volt.

With it being a gov't vehicle, it is possible that it is a 24v system. Are the batteries hooked up in series or parallel? In series, 24v. Parallel, 12v.

Take it to your local National Guard Armory, you might just find one of the boys will slap a new battery in it no questions asked. Don't ask me how I know that.

If i saw it i could look at it and tell, but there could be a info plate on the drivers door on the inside riveted in place. Also, heavy brush/grill gaurd, cutout in grill with a round plug on one side and a strange looking hooded light on the other, and some odd light switches on the interior.

Rogue Ram had a good idea too, take it by your local armory, they'll be able to help you out. Guess where the new wiper motor for my HMMWV came from;)

Here's a link to one of my M1009s military BlaZER

It should be real easy to determine if it a military M1009. They have a strange charging system and 12 volt to everything but hte starter and glow plugs. I bought my M1028 from the local fire dept. Have someone that is familiar with them to look at the charging system.
