Governor not working ???

Do these trucks not govern out at or around redline? I pulled out into traffic this morning and cobbed on it next thing I noticed my tach is on 3500. I feel sure that if I hadn't let off the pedal it would have went further. Does anyone elses truck do this or is mine tore up? My last truck was a PSD and I know it was governed.

On the up side this truck will easily hit the 120 on the speedo. The rpms are a little in the red though.

come on now you mean to tell me no one here has run there truck to red line or run it against the governor. All I need to know is if it is governed which I believe it is and what rpm they should be governed at. Also how many RPM's would be considered too much for a stock valve train. Maybe not having a working goveror is a good thing;)

any ideas on what would cause the governor not to work:confused:

mine has 6300 on the odometer. It is probably a little new yet too. I found at how fast it would run when a D Max was giving me a hard time. I pulled up beside him at about 90 laid it too the floor. I figured it would govern out but it didn't the speedo hit around the 118 mark and the D Max was way back in the rear view. I then noticed the tach in the red and let off.

Well, maybe on a future road trip... .

(got to drive an hour just to get to a freeway. Not many many good speed roads near here)

Should be 3200 rpm as I understand - best way to check is just put it in neutral and start revving - should stop somewhere ... ... I haven't tried my '03 yet.

Re: Governor not working ???

Mine goes to 3500 way too easy. I don't think I've hit a governor yet and I've been to 3500 a few times.

Just keep an eye in your rearview mirror. When you see pieces laying on the road, back her off a couple hundred rpm. :D :D :D

I will volunteer to see at just what RPM she comes apart at. I will post my results here. Someone from Cummins told me a few years back that it actually does not start coming apart well into the mid four thousand range. She should really be screaming then.

parshal I am glad to hear mine is not the only one doing this. The funny thing is the engine still sounds fine at that rpm. Maybe an occasional hard run won't hurt it any. Casey I will keep a look out for flying parts be it yours or mine. :D :D

I always understood it was best to have some load on when running up to the governor. Perhaps 2nd gear up a slight grade would keep enough back pressure on the drive line to find the governor limit without exceeding your personal speed limit. I would like to know the governor limit, but I am not going to travel at 100+ mph to find out.

The '03's should pull hard to 3,500, then stop dead in their tracks.

My '98. 5 24V pulls HARD to 3,100, then eases up to 3,500.

Showing off to gasser friends,, I have taken my 24V to 3,500RPM in Neutral to show. . 1: There is no boost without a load (or very little) 2: Cummins designs a full speed govener (redline), and it sure doesn't sound like a gasser governer (redline)

HTH,

At DC training they run them up against the governor all the time. It does not hut anything to do it for short periods of time in neutral. I have done it on mine many times. It always revs quickly to 3500 and just holds there, just as it was designed.
