Hwy 2 in Montana

I just got a Garmin c530 gps. I notice there is something called WAAS/EGNOS as an alternative to gps mode. Is anyone familiar with that ? Can you tell me if there is any disadvantage/advantage of that over gps mode ?

Thanks,

TRat

WAAS standsfor Wide Area Augmentation System...

100 meters: Accuracy of the original GPS system, which was subject to accuracy degradation under the government-imposed Selective Availability (SA) program.

15 meters: Typical GPS position accuracy without SA.

3-5 meters: Typical differential GPS (DGPS) position accuracy.

< 3 meters: Typical WAAS position accuracy.

In other words, operate in WAAS mode... It will basically show your position in major cities in the within the actual lane or offramp you are in... .

Cheers, Bill

thanks for the reply.

Is there any reason then NOT to use the WAAS ? (uses battery faster, more processor intensive so it doesnt update as fast etc ?)
