Any Metallica Fans??(You ain't gonna believe this!)

Anyone live in the area?

Found out last night my next contract is there. Will be there from 12 to 18 months starting mid-November. I've been by there on I-80 quite a few times, and even been through town once or twice but never really stopped and investigated the situation.

I am pretty sure there is a Dodge dealer in town, but don't know if they are Cummins friendly or not. I think we have a spot for the fiver in one of the mobile home parks there.

I grew up in north central/northwest Kansas, so am fairly familiar with the climate and stuff, but just wondering what there is for recreation in G. I. ? Any good restaurants? Shopping for the Missus???

Thanks.

Steve

I lived there for twenty-three years before I came to Boise in 1990. I have two sons there. Oldest son, Bill, is the manager of the Applied Industrial Technologies branch. Younger son, Scott, is a twenty-four year cop on the GIPD and is also a long-time County Supervisor. My wife and I will probably move back there as we get more decrepit, but hope it will be a few years yet. :)

Grand Island is a small city (around 40,000) that is much bigger than its size—meaning that it is a regional city that draws from many miles around. They just opened two new Walmart Super Stores, one on each end of town (not that this constitutes great shopping :D , but it does indicate its thriving economy). Your better half will find some good stores there, but not being a lady, I’m shopping challenged. I will say that both my wife and I could usually find everything we needed without going to the bigger cities, Omaha (150 miles), or Lincoln (100 miles).

There is a good sized Dodge dealer but I can’t assess their diesel friendliness. Bear in mind, this is a big agricultural region and diesels are a way of life there, so you will probably fare OK.

If you are outdoorsy you’ll enjoy upland bird hunting, waterfowl hunting, deer hunting, fishing, camping (better camping choices than I have out here). You have to drive a ways for water sports but there are some good lakes within 75-100 miles. And you MUST buy into the BIG RED mania if you ever hope to succeed in life! :D

There are some really good restaurants (Whiskey Creek Steak House, Carlos O’Kelly’s Mexican Café, etc. ) but I wouldn’t call them great.

If you are a “people person” you’ll love the friendliness of the Nebraskans! If you look for a church there are some really good ones, including Abundant Life Christian Center, the one I served for twenty-three years. It is right down the street from St. Francis Medical Center at the corner of Faidley Avenue and U. S. Highway 281. If you go, ask for Dale, the Dodge diesel nut, and they’ll introduce you to one of the finest men you’ll ever meet!!

Gene..... Thanks for taking the time to reply. I will be working at the hospital there. Once I get settled, I will have to look up a few people. Drop me a line next time you come through to visit and I would like to buy you a cup of coffee.
Thanks again for your help.

Two Super Wal-Marts, wow. That may not sound like much to some people, but consider the fact that where we are now, we drive 70 miles (one way) to get to a WM, and it is not even a Super store!

Good luck and take care.
