I recently bought a 2006 1 ton 4wd dually -- man trans

The maintenance book calls for lubing the front driveshaft fitting at every oil change.

The owners manual says the same --- it locates this job at the transfer case u-joint.

I see no zerks at ANY of the U-joints on this truck !

Have they changed all the ujoints to sealed units ? ---- or is there some other way to lube this joint at the tranfer case ??

what am i missing ?

thanx ----jolzeke

It is the CV joint that needs to be greased, it is REALLY hard to see on the manual trans trucks. You WILL need a needle adaptor to lube it. Look behind the front joint with your head under the clutch area, you will need to jack up one front tire so you can rotate the driveshaft. Like I said, it is not the u-joint, it is the center of the CV joint that gets lubed. If you do a search you should be able to find some pics, even with that it is hard to find

Not my pic. You'll need the needle grease attachment. I jack up the driver front tire. With the tire in the air it's very easy to rotate the tire to find the grease point.

I had a little trouble getting the needle adapter to stay on the grease gun so I used to metal duct tape to keep it in the gun and now thats the only thing the gun is use for.

thanks guys for the help on this !

wow -- VERY hard to find the fitting and very hard to get to it !

--very poor design -- no wonder why i read the dealers don't even know about this or where it is !

I first tried a 4" big needle that was too long and also too fat i think to get grease into the hole -- dono, couldn't get a straight shot at the hole... :>)

I then tried a smaller needle type adapter which i actually stuck in the hole (i had read this needle worked in another post) -- that worked ... ..... i didn't think any grease was getting in cause i saw no grease coming out the boot nearby ---- then i noticed the new grease coming out near the other cv/ujoint ... ... ?

after i found the correct grease fitting the main problem was getting to it ---- the skid plate was not the problem ---- the crossmember support was in the way ---- no way to move that

oh well -- job done and now it will be easier the next time ... ...
