Grease for Dana 60?

Hey guys. What do you guys use to lube all of you front end parts? Mine is a 4x4, D60. The red "All purpose" grease doesn't seem to be cutting it. What is the THICK black stuff that was there before? A friend suggested "Marine" grease. I just feel that the front has some "rattle"(so to speak) that shouldn't be there.

Am I an idiot? Maybe I need to go WAY back to basics!

From the title of your post, I thought you were asking about grease to go into the differential. Have to report ya to the Pastor for that. But since you asked about grease for actual grease fittings, I'd say the balck stuff that is in there was a different color at one time way back when. I use the Mystic JT-8 (6?) red grease. Had no problems so far with it in 6 trucks, and probably pushing 200K total miles.

Alot of Farm Supply stores carry it. Seems to be decent stuff. Use alot on the farm.

There are three main types of general grease. There is the crappy blue stuff (don't touch it, it just makes a mess and runs out when it gets hot), then there is the cheap red stuff, usually about 50% more money than the blue, and it is better with heat but lacks the impact resistance (for lack of better words). Then, there is the GOOD red stuff, it is about 3 - 4 times more money than the cheap blue, and it is high heat and high impact. It is what we have to run in our excavator fleet come summertime when it is 30 C out and the cylinder rams are baking to the point where you get a bad burn when you climb on the machine for a mid-day inspection and are not thinking and use them as handles (Then you have to operate with your fingertips for the rest of the day cause the palms are hurting). Anyways, the good stuff around here is a dark red and comes in a black tube, but I'm sure there are many different types. Maybe try calling a heavy equipment supply store, they should be able to provide some details.

Andrew, I've been uising Mobil 1 synthetic gear lube, seems to work ok I guess. I don't know how much it costs, I got 4 tubes of it free from buddys shop. I imagine being synthetic, it will cost more. Bill
