2nd Gen Non-Engine/Transmission A/C question

Engine/Transmission (1994 - 1998) whats new in 12v single turbos?

I have owned the truck below in my signature for the past 12000 miles and have not yet greased any of the grease points on the truck during the oil changes I perform. My questions:

1. What, where and how many grease points are there? I do not have the owners manual or shop manual so do not know where they all are.

2. What type of grease? I would assume NGLI #2?

3. Can I use synthetic grease (Amsoil) when I do this or is it not compatible with the grease that is in there now?

4. I have a cheap grease gun, costs $10. Should I get something better? Does it really matter?

Thanks

Phil

I would like to know an answer to this as well. I had heard recently that you have to choose the proper grease or it could mix with the current grease and cause it to loose it's lubrication properties? Could someone give me a quick crash course on the different types of grease, what applications use which grease and which grease to not use on or with other types of grease?

Thanks, Joe

Your truck probably doesn't have any grease fittings (zirks) on it anywhere. There are a couple options: grease what you can with a grease needle or install zirks. Or both.

Either method can be argued but some positions (ball joints for example) can't be lubed easily (if at all) with a needle. I've installed several zirks on my truck because it's faster to lube fittings than use a needle. Of course there's the install time for the zirks so it could be a wash.

I also install a plastic cap that keeps the crud out of the fitting. They are cheap, I think I got them from Ried Tool.

All the parts I've replaced have lube fittings in them. I've installed zirks into all the places I could reach with a drill that haven't been replaced yet.

As for grease, Amsoil is compatible with other brands. I use the waterproof grease on the steering parts and I use the racing grease on the u-joints.

A cheap gun is fine, the only upgrade would be an air powered gun which is useful at times.

If you do keep the truck and start replacing a lot of greasable parts, you will need a 90 degree adapter for the end to lube the upper ball joint on a 4 x 4. NAPA has them and the grease needles. Just be careful so you don't damage the boots if you use the needle method.
