I test drove a C/C 4X4 w/ a steel tow body on it. Drove great, transmission was impressive and $300 for the exhaust brake is a must. the transmission was the big standout on this truck. Shifting was seamless and the exhaust brake very effective. The motor needs more HP/TQ IMHO. The only drawback for me is it doesn't have a GCVWR of 26K lbs. Everthing is a plus on this rig except I'll still be 3K lbs over max weight w/ it.

I'm going to give DC another 2 years and if they don't come out w/ a 4500/5500, I'm gonna get a Freightliner or other med duty truck to tow my 5er. Lets hope DC keeps moving in the right direction and gives us w/ heavy tow needs a 4500/5500 choice.

Take care and Happy New Year,

Wiredawg

Rather have the 4500/5500

Grant:

I'd rather have the smaller footprint of a 4500/5500 that goes 98% of the places and could be a daily driver. I used to drive my 3500 as a daily driver in DC and did OK w/ it. I couldn't do that w/ a Freightliner. But, we must do what we must: My goal is to get legal on my GCVW.

Cheers, Ron

P. S. do you have a 2500 or 3500? your description doesn't say.

WHY not look at a good used MDT or a HDT day cab or sleeper..... I sell used trucks for a livin and have been for 31 years... I currently own a nice 2001 Volvo daycab single axle that I pull my Sunnybrook 5ver with... . NOTHING LIKE IT..... It sits tall... . pulls like a grown man... . drives better than ANYTHING I have ever drove..... ANd gets 11. 4 mpg with a cummins n14 435 hp engine... ... I sold 84 of these last year from Waklins motors lines... ... I converted this my self and looking at doing several conversons every year..... trucksalesdave... . central Georgia

I agree with the request for a 26000 GCWR. Is there a problem that precludes DC from building a vehicle such as this? With the Cummins and a great transmission, it would be a great 5er puller. Can't be a Fed. Reg. because the other manufacturers build them. Why not DC? Maybe Robert or Jim Anderson or one of the other folks at TDR could write an article on this subject. It would go very well with the great new column on trucks used with RV'S. A 26000 lb. GCVW Ram would make a lot of RVERs happy and LEGAL. Just my $0. 02 worth.

David:

Getting a used RV toter would be the backup plan.

Klenger:

Right now, my 02 3500 weighs 9,600 lbs and my 5er 17K lbs for a total of 26,600 lbs, placing me 5,100 lbs over my current GCVWR. Truck handles great and the triple axle Travel Supreme has outstanding stopping power. The 3500 CC would get me w/in 3K of my target, but for the money, iwant to be at least right at it. I figure a 4X4 QC CC dually with a tow body will weigh out right about where my 3500 is right now.

Not to get into a long winded story, but my my 02 3500 was an upgrade from my '00 Ram 2500 lb 4X4. The short of it is I wasn't very versed on GVWR and GCVWR when an RV dealer sold me the Travel Supreme. They told me the Ram would pull it fine, and it did. After I got somewhat educated, I decided I needed an upgrade between a Ram 3500 and a F-450. I opted for the Cummns and the 3500 and 5100 lbs over.

I looked at lighter 5ers, but to be honest, we really really like our Travel Supreme. We have a washer and dryer, triple slides and lots of oak wood on the inside.

I appreciate the comments and suggestions. that why the TDR is a great place to chew the fat on topics like this.

Start saving those nickels now.

Well, even if those nickels were dollars in my previous post, I still could buy a new truck. Divorce does horrible things to your checking/savings accounts.

Looks like used trucks for me from now on. But I like to see what you folks say about these new trucks.

Good Day all. Yes I'm also waiting for a 4500 or a 5500 Ram. I also pull a heavy trailer and I want more. Right Now my GVW on the truck is 17,999 kg or 39,597lbs and the truck and trailer whight is 7560kg or 16,632lbs so that means I can only hual 10,439kg or 22,965lbs which if my work is nuthing. So I have to make the 02 3500 last intel the 4500 or 5500 some out or go ta a frightliner.
