After reading all the horror stories on the board about that first oil change i talked to mechanic buddy of mine to get some advice on the best tool to use for the filter. He suggested some slip joint oil filter pliers from Harbor Freight Tools, under 10 bucks on sale. I completed my first oil change today at 2176 miles and they worked great. They have nice sharp teeth on them to grip the filter at the top where it will not just collapse, and the tip about the 1 gallon zip lock bag over the filter to avoid the mess worked great did not spill a drop. Got that from another post thanks to who ever it was.

Penzoil sells the same tool at most auto supplys out here in CA. I got mine at Kragen Auto for $9. Looks like slip joint pliers except the jaws are made to fit oil filters.

Beware not all these tools have the sharp teeth needed to grip the filter well. I had noticed some at parts stores but they weren't the same.

I have been using a tool VERY similar to this for several years now... except it's a higher quality version... at an incrementally higher price. I purchased this at Griot's Garage ( www.griotsgarage.com ). You can (totally) remove a filter in less than a minute. #ad

Pliers work great. Just gotta watch the hot lead on the alternator.

I took mine to the dealer for the first oil change. He used the pliers (first time I'd seen them). He touched the hot lead and got mega-sparks. Blew out a main fuse in the box on the drivers side wheel well.

Looked for pliers for myself after that and low-and-behold my future son-in-law had an extra set.

Nothin' like a free-bee!

Kragans has a set that works good, self adjusting. Another trick I use is to poke a hole in the bottom of the filter with an 'awl' while under the truck and let the filter drain while the pan drains. Saves a lot of mess.

Eric, a friend of mine was nice enough to supply me with a protective cap for the alternator terminal so this would not be a problem. Thanks M. R. #ad

An alternative to a protective cap is to goop on some "Liquid Electrical Tape" over the alternator terminals. It's kind of like the Plasti-dip stuff that you coat tools with. I know Eastwood sells it, as well has Harbor Freight Tools, it may be available in local auto parts stores. I also coated my battery terminals (with the proper red and black colors). It helps keep corrosion down, as well as prevent the possibility of a short if I touch a wrench to the positive terminal while working (or is it "fiddling around"?) under the hood.

I had some extra "plastic dip" which I put on the Alt and both hot battery leads. Stuff peels off easily if you ever need to take it off. Made me much more comfortable fiddling with my bypass mount.

OH yeah, don't need a tool to change the filters now, can get a nice grip with both hands!
