My grid heater light comes on while driving chimes 10 times I think. Stays on awhile and then goes off. This happens during a 25 min drive. Empty. 60 to 70 MPH. Everything seems normal. Smarty doesn't show a code either. Just had a transmission flush and updated Smarty Jr. Any ideas???

Yep, excessive amount of fuel being returned during coast with no pedal applied. You've got something going on with your injectors or rail.............mine did it and it turned out that I had a bad injector that was returning an excessive amount of fuel.

Sag posted it, search the code number that pops up when you do the 3 key on, key off cycles.

Do that and it will Show you the Fault Codes into the Odometer.

And forget those cheap Codereaders, they never show you all the stored faults.

Only the Autoenginuity Tool show them all.

I did that the only thing that show is "DonE" screen goes blank then back to miles.
"done" usually means no codes stored, but I have found P0700's(iirc), with my brother's code reader that did not show up in the odo window.
DFitz, can you find that thread Sag2 posted, I seem to remember that...?

Sometimes it doesn't throw a code for some odd reason. I would re-torque the cross over tubes and hope that stops it. If it still does it then it's time for injectors.

I am taken it to a diesel shop Wednesday. I will check for a leak. Were expecting bad weather this weekend. Is it OK to drive empty maybe pull someone out of a ditch? Or need to park and watch snow and ice stack up on it?

Sometimes the codes will not come up with just any reader, takes a Dodge specific one to see it. As long as you aren't trying to work the truck hard dooubt it will effect anything. If the leak detection is bad enough for long enough the ECU will derate power. Not gonna save it if your blow torching a piston but you should see signs of that if it is happening.

A high return rate and a stuck injector are two very different things. You may eventually have drive-ability issues but it isn't going to hurt it.

Excessive smoke, black and\or grey, is usually noticeable when the injectors start over fueling. Tuned correctly you should see litttle smoke. EGT's also may show slightly higher than normal. If you haven't upgraded the LP that could be driving the issues also.

lp is the lift pump.

my 2006 did the same thing. happned when I was at highway speeds then took foot off pedal. did it on and off for a couple years. dealer said it was a bad glow plug!(LOL). my head and injectors were off my 2004.5 truck. dealer swapped it with my 2006 when I bought it. had a lot of money in that head! anyway, just had all my injectors pulled and flow tested. only one passed. new oem injectors for me. now no more haze behind me all the time. no more fogging out intersections. I'm hoping milage will improve greatly! I was getting 9.5mpg pulling a 20foot pontoon boat back from florida to conn. Flat ground! truck runs like a whole different vehical now! get those injectors checked! new OEM injectors were $340/each and remove, install and test was about $600 I think.
