I had the 67A recall done a few weeks ago. The weather has just started to cool off, and I noticed the grid heater comes on at cold start with ambient up to about 65°. The really strange part I do not recall in years past is the grid heater comes on for maybe 20 seconds to a minute on a hot restart if the ambient is 60° or lower. I checked a couple times and intake air temp was over 100° in cold ambient, yet heater still cycled on. Anyone else notice anything like that?

@sag2, I'll confirm the same. I thought at first, maybe I was over thinking the cycle times, until we had a warm spell of weather return. The other thing that has cropped up on mine, P2609, air heater performance. I upgraded the bus bar with the BD kit. I reset the CEL a few times. When the temps were warmer, it didn't return until temps dropped again. Other noticeable thing is the clunk from the grid heater relay isn't as loud as it was. Going to get a new relay on order. Batteries are checking good with a switch side to side and thorough terminal/cable cleaning. Crank voltage is 11.4 volts. Figure the the relay has given up!

Grid Heater is used for not only for cold starts but for emission control ( aka white smoke control) ,
so it is quite possible the update program triggers the grid heater more than the original programming.
Thanks @Grumpy8811. Interesting, didn't know that.
That must be why my 2020 HO's heater will occasionally come on in San Diego's mild weather after sitting for a few weeks. It's the first start-up, and the outside temperature is 65 degrees. It's emissions-oriented, not cold start temperature oriented.
I thought I might have a heater circuit problem. Good to know it's normal.

I just started the truck after it was sitting since last night. Ambient temp was 64° as recorded on the cluster. It preheated for about 6 seconds, then remained on after the start for another 20 seconds. I do not recall it acting like this before the 67A.

The intake manifold temp that has been used for years for pre-heat is 66°F.

Post heat has always seemed to be operational at a higher trml, but I’ve never seen the actual number associated with it.

I hit 25 MPH and I believe that kicks the grid heater (post heat) out. Still appears to do so. I recall cycling via headlight dimming after startup but not staying "on" before the recall. Now I watched the battery voltage stay low after engine start long enough for the aftermarket gauges to boot up and display values including bat voltage.

As rare as the grid heater need is in my high temps it's still enough cold days for it to finish off heat damaged batteries. If my batteries now 2 years old with the higher and longer than usual summer temps over the last two years make it through this winter I will be impressed.

where do you live that it is that Hot.
I live in SWFLA, which means it is pretty hot year round.. anyway on my second set of batteries in a 2016. current set of AGM's are 4 years old..

Dealer did the 67A recall when they installed my particulate matter sensor. My 2022 3500 ho is parked and started in the garage . Cold start out side is very rare but at 10 f so far this winter I have noticed nothing diffenent in the starting outside in the cold. Just my two cents

67A doesn’t apply to your truck, it’s for 13-18 trucks.

"67A doesn’t apply to your truck, it’s for 13-18 trucks."

Which leads me to wonder about our replacement engine we got in April 2021, Cummins factory rebuild. I keep getting the notices for 67A recall but most likely the newer engine would not need it I guess. The system at the dealer must not know that engine got replaced? Not sure how that all works. New engine SN won't match up with the VIN #. I mean it doesn't keep me awake at night, just wondering these things.

67A is software, so unless the software in the ECM was updated then it will still need to be applied.

The motor installed in ‘21 was still built to meet ‘14 specs.
