Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) Grid Heaters Cycling??

I know the Grid heaters cycling on and off, and between the two heaters... But what parameters does the ECU look at to cycle the heaters?? Coolant temp, MPH,. . Inlet Air temp???

I noticed the other day I was sitting in a drive though and my heaters started cycling. . it was 65 outside temp, and coolant temp was 190~... First time I have seen them cycle this warm. . seems like they are cycling more and more... Anyone have any ideas??? or just normal???



I know I should probably invest in a cut-off for the heaters. .

I purchased a kit to stop that exact problem.

PS Diesel products sells a quick fix.

You put two temp. sensors in water jacket which already has two plugs in place. The two sensors prevent the grids from going on when the water temp reachs a preset value. That is why at night your headlights sometimes dim then go bright as the grids draw alot of power.

I think it looks at coolant, IAT, speed, and ambient (under battery). I know over 15MPH, mine kick off automatically.



Don't remember who did it first, but I put an oil pressure switch on the oil filter and connected it to the solenoids... takes a little rewiring, but it's worth it. Soon as you build oil pressure, it kicks the grids out.

Gizmo007 I see you quoted the ambient temp senser is under the battery :confused: That senser is to detect if the battery is getting over charged and over heated. I have seen quite a few posts that this is for ambient air temp and just wanted to mention it.
