Gee, my new 01 get's a lot of bugs on the radiator , I"m thinking of getting some nice inserts for the grill and the bumper. I would like to ask those that use them if you experience any cooling problems due to restricted air flow ? Maybe there is a special make or model you can suggest.

You guy's make this a great site, Thanks again

Al,

I replaced the honeycomb in my grill with a stainless steel wire mesh from Stull. They also make inserts for the bumper openings which will stop bugs from getting into the intercooler and A/C condensor there as well. They also do a great job of stopping rocks and pebbles from getting to the radiators. They have a close to stock look (only better IMO) and don't look like add ons at all. I bought mine through Summit Racing - www.summitracing.com , part #STU-2001 for the grill and #STU-2004 for the bumper inserts. The bugs (or bug parts) that pass through these screens seems to be small enough to pass right through the intercooler/condensor/radiator. Here's a picture of what they look like:

It's been talked about on here lately. Do a search and you should find quite a few ideas. Me I just got a (I think its either 1/16 or 1/8" square hole wire)and covered the condenser with it not many bugs get through it now. Some wire it to the back side of the grill which is how I think I will change mine later too. The grasshoppers are still bad down here. This is the cheapest way to do it. But you will get some more replys.

inserts

this has been discussed quite a bit recently. aftermarket inserts in different configurations and costs are available. Stull, Steel Horse, Putco, Trenz, and Lund and others have inserts of various kinds. some require you to cut the honeycomb out, others bolt through the honeycomb. depending on how much screening you want, different products may apply. i recently installed Lund (Cloud-Rider) winter inserts. look in "Reader's Rigs" at the pix under HD Ram. these are stainless steel, bolt thru the honeycomb and stop air. there are also "screen inserts" from the same people for summer. they may not "screen" as much as you want. another TDR member, is making winter inserts, and selling them very reasonably. sorry for the long post. need more info, pm me--i think i've researched it to death... ... .

Me & steve have the same grille and I concur. It's great looking and doesnt stand a chance of taking a rock in the intercooler. #ad

The metal ones that Steve is talking about sound like the right way to go. I can only vouch for the wrong way, which is any of the plastic inserts that clip into the existing honeycomb. They look like garbage - I threw mine away about the third time somebody pointed at them and laughed.

Anything that is going to hit my intercooler now has to get through the steel honeycomb on my Ranchhand Bumper, which I think must have been designed by the crew that did the M1 Abrams tank.
