My wife got me a Traeger Wood Pellet Grill for Christmas... . WOW!!!!. . theres no way I can adequately describe how good this thing cooks!. I've cooked whole chicken, breasts, thighs, hamburgers, steaks, brisket... . vegetables. . This thing does EVERYTHING right. . its almost impossible to screw up. . It even makes an idiot like me look like a good cook!!!. .

If you're thinking of a new grill, check out the wood pellet grills..... better than any charcoal or gas grill... .

As a long-time pellet stove owner for domestic heat, I can attest to the fact that it is a good source of heat and very clean burning.

Glad to hear the good report.

I looked at a Traeger last year but I opted for a Cookshack smoker instead. I was a little leery of the heat control and how long it took to get to temperature with a wood pellet grill. I wasn't worried so much about chicken or steaks as I was about searing salmon & ahi. They like a HOT iron grill for a real short cook-time. Is that something a Traeger is capable of, or is it more of a chicken & steak grill?

Years ago, we bought a couple of very cheap "new from Ronco" (or whoever) cooking grills that use nothing more than a dozen or so balls of wadded-up newspaper (the best use for that trash since the birdcage).

It lights easily and cooks VERY well and fast. No fumes. No fuss. No shortage of free fuel. Virtually nothing to clean up or empty out but a few light ashes. Very compact and easily transported. And the burgers and such tasted great! The doggone things were absolutely amazing!

We bough a few more (2 for $10 or so) and gave them to friends and family. Everyone, including me, was dubious at first, but soon changed their tune after one use.

I have no doubt wood pellets have the same surprising potential as newspaper, just more of it.

Here in Iowa, cornburners are extremely popular. Very hot heat. Very compact and readily-available fuel. Very little cleanup. No chopping, sawing, cutting, or splitting.

I would like to install a cornburner boiler in my backyard and pipe the hot water to my furnace like so many others do.

The standard controller that it came with just has a smoke, medium, and high setting. Its adequate for almost anything... I opted for the digital controller with its own feedback thermocouple. Basically, I set it at the temp. I want it to maintain, and it will do whatever it needs in order to hold that target temp.

I've been cooking in some cold ambient temps. (25-35 degrees) and it appears to do just fine.

I also looked at a Green Mountain Grill, they seem to be of equal quality, but they had no local dealer, so the wife bought me the Traeger. .

My most recent was a brisket for the SuperBowl... . WOW!!. . tender, juicy, and absolutely perfect!!. .

How do the heaters work? Same principle?. . Do they produce significant heat?

Glad you like your new grill, have had one going on 5 years. we smoked and cooked a twenty pound turkey for our family party it was great. Be sure to try the differant flavor pellets

I have had a traeger for several years, they are very good for cooking on, but I also have a cookshack smoker, and if you are wanting to smoke anything it is much better and easier then the traeger. They are both great for different applications.

I'm suppried I never found the cookshack... I bet I spent 2 straight weeks doing searches for wood pellet grilles... No doubt, I bet all the brands are better than charcoal/gas. . I guess the only downside I've seen so far is the initial price... but so far, its been worth every dime.

So far, I've tried the hickory, mesquite, and oak... thats what I will use most... recently i've been blending different flavors... .

They are neat... !!!!. .

Hey Wingate,

The cookshack is not a pellet burning smoker, just wanted to make that clear. It is electric with a tray that sets on the electric element that you put your wood chunks in, throw your meat in, set the temp and forget it. It makes the best ribs I have ever eatin.

x 2... I also did some lamb chops from Costco in there a few weeks back, & I've never had better.

oh, ok... I bet that works good also. It would seem that all of these that allow you to "set it and forget it" are far superior to the old charcoal and a match grilles.
