i also have a grinding problem of the transmission.

first gear is fine. when i am stopped, and put it in second for take off and let the cluth out without too much gas, there is grinding coming from the transmission area (i think). when i'm on the lower side of RPMs and shift into third and keep the accelerator light, it's the same grinding. fourth and fifth are silent in this aspect.

there isn't a grind in between the gears or as i shift into them, only once the clutch starts to engage and the truck isn't given a lot of fuel. if i mash on the accelerator up through the gears i don't hear a thing.

when stopped, the shift into first and second seems harder to de. i have to force it in, especially second. third is okay, fourth is really easy, and fifth is okay. could this be related tot he grinding? perhaps a pilot bearing dragging?

thoughts?

pls help!

thanks and much appreciated,

tt

Does it ever start at a red light or stop sign while you are sitting still with the clutch depressed and the transmission in gear? Could it be the throwout bearing for the clutch?

hmmmm... i can't honestly say. i think i'll take a quick trip around the neighborhood and pay more attention to it and get back to you with the details.

you're meaning sitting still, in gear, clutch depressed. i'll check it out today, thank you.

Yep, if it's "grinding" while you're in gear and sitting still with the clutch pressed in, you'll feel it vibrate in the clutch pedal. If you take it outta gear, let out the clutch and the vibration goes away, I would guess it was the throw-out bearing. Pretty common problem, if it is.

nope, no grinding when stopped or when clutch is released. i observed it this morning and grinding can be noticed when in 2nd or 3rd and below 1000rpm. as soon as it pops above the one grand mark, grinding/vibration ceases. more noticeable when under load/going uphill.

pardon my ignorance, but i don't know where to start, or for which part to pray for to not go out anytime soon (and please not be the transmission).

Wait... you aren't talking about gear lash are you? Does it make noise in the higher gears below 1000rpm? Does it make the same noise in gear as you drive up an incline at idle? If it does you're probably talking about gear lash in the transmission... this is normal and doesn't hurt anything. Otherwise I'm unsure at this point.

Sorry if I'm being a pest... just haven't seen anyone else post so I'll do what I can!

not being a pest at all!!!

not in the higher gears, just 2nd and 3rd. and it'll make the noise if i go about 1000 and then come back down at a coast(which i noted today).

yes, today i went uphill in 3rd with foot off accelerator, the rpms were up around 1500, then fell off and once they hit 1000 the vibration was back (going up hill still). it's done this for the longest time, i couldn't pin point a time when it started.

Gear lash, groan... whatever you want to call it, that's what it sounds like to me, in which case that's perfectly normal

I have this same noise (like a nut is loose on a vibrating bolt). Only that It started after i installed a larger clutch in the 4500. I have 240k and mine does it in the mid to high rpms of 3rd and from 1300 to 2000 in 4th gear. but I have to say it feels smooth when hard acceleration through those rpm ranges. You really think this is just gear lash? -mike

Becareful, you may be "lugging" the engine in 2nd or 3rd below 1000 RPM.
