Particularly towing but even unlaiden, when I lift off the throttle and decelerate on the gear using engine braking, there comes a horrible grinding/rattling noise from under the truck. As bad as it sounds it seems my drivetrain should have grenaded already only the noise doesn't seem to effect driveability or anything accept sound REAL bad. It's not all that loud unladen but when towing, if I were to make it do it while taxiing in a campground, people would turn to look. It seems to do it in any gear so long as I slow in it all the way down to 1400 rpm or lower. That's when it's the loudest. Anybody heard of this?

Thanks in advance for any info you all can provide.

Sounds like normal brake {exhaust ] hold back in action . Turn off the brake in camp ground keep the heads from turning    :D

Deceleration Grinding

I get the same kind of noise, Ramalama, WITHOUT an exhaust brake and just when towing. Sounds really bad, but doesn't seem to affect driveability.

Good thing for the DC extended warranty!:p

R. R If you get the same noise and without a exhaust brake , then I think its time for one of the Dogge boys to ride along and listen as you have the extended warranty and note it on the trucks history. save a lot time and paper later . Hope its not any thing wrong. Ron:rolleyes:

Ron- I had this problem before with my 5 crap dealer. They insist they have to duplicate the problem, and since it only happens while towing, they insist I LEAVE my expensive tow toys for them to test drive with. Yeah,RIGHT!

I'll just wait till it gets bad enough to do it without the trailer.

They wouldn't change the thermostat before for this reason- I bought one from Geno's.

(OK, how do you do "quotes" ??)

Look at lower right corner of message , hit quote button thats it . (quote) LOL . :D Ron

Thanks everybody. Yes I don't have an E-brake -yet. I like the idea of having a ride along document the problem so if it should lead to anything in the future I'll have something to refer back to which will help these idiot dealers own the problems they should own.

Kinda bummed though. I was hoping you all would chime in with a simple and obvious cause and a 'just let it happen' attitude. I'll be sure and have it looked at now and that's what I needed to know. Thanks again!

Sounds a lot like a gear rubbing against the case in the transmission when back pressure is applied.

(like engine braking) Had the same thing happen many years ago in a '69 Ford N 750 with 5 speed OD trans. Shop found a spacer had been left out during building. Had trouble with Ford on that one to!!!

Grinding Noise Found

Ramalama, the noise you are describing is the front driveshaft vibrating and creating a harmonic noise. If you touch the shifter toward the boot, you’ll feel the vibration when it makes the noise. These types of vibrations are most commonly associated with driveshaft misalignment but my truck makes the same noise and the alignment is good.

I discovered where the noise was coming from using a Chassis Ear that has clip on microphones you can listen to while driving. But as usual, the Dodge boys gave me the two standard answers: “This is the first time we’ve ever heard of this” and “It’s within specs. ” In this case the specs are non-existent so I guess if the noise didn’t bother the tech, it’s within specs.

Maybe those of us that have the problem could start a list and force Dodge to ante up and fix the problem as it’s only going to get worse with time and probably vibrate the u-joints apart or worse.

I hope your noise is already fixex. I had a similar noise upon deceleration. Going from a noisy cab 92 to a 99 used, I thought the noise was normal since in the cab the truck was twice as qiet as my 92. In cruise controll going 70 MPH my transmission made an awful rip and grindind noise.

Upon investigation at the dealer they found the rear output shaft of the trany snapped in two. Reason why was the trany was totally dry. I was wondering why someone would trade in a truck that was under two years old with low miles. now I know. Thank goodnessfor extended warranties.
