Ok, I just bought a 93 350 club cab 2 wheel drive with the Getrag transmission. It just turned over 168K miles. I'm wondering what could cause a grinding noise in the transmission when I shift into 3rd and 4th while on the pedal? It doesn't do it while driving slowly. It also sqeaks while retarding, downshifting. On another note, what oil is recommended for the rear end differential. Thanks.

This type of noise is not normal. You better get it pulled and torn apart. The problems will only get worse with the more miles you put in.

Worse= more $$$

my best advise to you mis to bring it to a competant trusted mechanic in your area & have them diagnose & repair the problem before as phill says the problem gets worse

it could be a pilot bearing, a throw out bearing, driveline problems, or mabey an internal trans problem

bring it to someont & please stop driving it till you know whats rong

What pedal are you on while you shift? I'm hope its the clutch pedal. Stay off the fuel while shifting. Downshift at lower rpm's, so transmission doesnt get that jolt when it rev's up.

Any good 75W90 gear oil for the rear diff. I like Mobil 1 synthetic products.

I mean when I get on the old gal a little bit, and then shift it grinds before taking the gear. When I drove like an old lady, it doesn't do it. It acts like the clutch may not be completely disengaging. Thanks.

Now that you have explained a little better we can get a little better diagonics going.

The grinding during shifting could be the clutch not releasing right. But at the point it is in now. You do not have much of a syncro left on the affected gears. The syncro is used to speed up the gears to an even speed so grinding does not happen. It sounds like the ones in your trans have been crushed down from to much pressure being used to get into gear from a poor releasing clutch.

This can also happen on a high milage trans to. The two gears your talking about are used a lot in town with low speed driving.

This type of problem can be caused by someone not using the clutch on shifts also. If they weren't to experienced it could lead to a set of wiped out syncro's. But you would see this on more gears.

To stop the grinding you need to pull the trans and probably replace the syncro's.
