Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) Grinding or clunking noise in drivetrain

For the past several months on occasion when backing up and usually with the wheels turned I get a clunking sound/feeling like a non-slip rearend will sometimes do however this is seeming like it is coming from right under my seat of the pants... like the transfer case... anybody got a clue? I hate to have to tear apart any drive-train components... gets awful expensive! Truck is an auto.

Did you check the U-joints, front DS, front DL? Is there end play on the out-put shaft?
