Started up the other day and noticed an unusual rattling/grinding sound. Shifting to drive or reverse, it went away. Back to park again, terrible noises. What now? I talked around to various gurus, they couldn't figure it out. Truck drives nicely as long as it's in gear.
Something had to be loose near the torque converter, or perhaps the flex plate was the culprit. Decided that after 100,000 plus miles, maybe to do transmission work if it was required... . and for sure find out what the noise was.
To shorten the story, after transmission removal, I found elongated bolt holes where the torque converter flex plate mounting bolts were. Hopefully this was the answer to the problem!
Perhaps this was a good enough reason to not only replace the flex plate, but do a heavy duty transmission rebuild job even though the transmission itself was basically okay.
Just in case someone has not thought of checking torque converter bolts for tightness, or found noise as I've described, suspect the flex plate mounting.
Thanks to the crew at Goerend Brothers Transmissions in St. Lucas, Iowa, for their help! They are a great bunch of guys and very knowledgeable.
