Hi:
We own a 93,3/4 ton, 2 wheel drive, cummins powered pick-up. It has the automatic transmission with the super cooler under the bed. The rear end ratio is 3. 55. We tow a heavy 5th wheel trailer and I would like to know what the gross combined weight rating is for this truck. I understand that the tow rating for the truck is 12,000 lbs. Is the GVW of the truck added to the tow rating to come up with the GCWR? What about hitch weight? Does that enter into it? Our gross weight the last time we scaled the truck and trailer with two people and 1/2 tank of fuel was 19,500 lbs. The truck does an excellent job but there are some changes that I feel that we need to make. The transmission overheated on us a couple of times coming down a long grade with the exhaust brake on so I have to do something in that area. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

According to my '93 owners manual, your GCWR is 14,000 lbs with the super duty cooler and 12,000 lbs without.

Manual transmision trucks are rated at 17,000 lbs.

Tongue weight for D/W 250's is 1,000 lbs for D/W 350's 1200 lbs.

A lot of these trucks are used for much heavier service that the above numbers.

Welcome Bruce
From what I can remember the GCWR of the autos was around 14,000#. Maybe in '93 it was a little more, but the standards were rated for 16,000#. The manual suppliment for the diesel in your vehicle should have those numbers for you.

Forgot to answer the other parts of your question: GCWR (Gross combined weight rating) or GCVWR (Gross combined vehicle weight rating) = truck's weight + trailer weight.

Tongue or hitch weight is a separate specification but does not add to the GCWR.

As an example, given a W250 auto trans truck equipped with the super duty cooler and weighing 7,000 lbs, pulling a 4,000 lb trailer with a tongue weight of 1,400 lbs.

The GCW (Gross combined weight) of 11,000 lbs(7,000 + 4,000=11,000)is below the 14,000 lb rating but too much weight is on the tongue and you have to shift the load.

Bruce, I have a 93 D350, does your exhaust brake work well with a non lockup converter? I am considering adding the brake to my 93 for use in towing a 10,000 lb. trailer. I heard that the exhaust brakes on these year trucks do not work very well. Thanks.
