:confused: DOES THE 5ER HAUE TO TO BE CONNECTED TO THE TRUCK IN ORDER FOR THE BREAKS TO WORK CORECT. THANKS EVERYBODY FOR YOUR REPLY I GUESS TO TELL YOU A LITTLE MORE ABOUT MY TROUBLES IF THE TRUCK IS NOT MOVING MY BREAKS WORK FINE THE CONTROLER TELLS ME I HAVE BREAKS . IF I MOVE THE TRUCK ANY AT ALL I GET A READING FROM MY PRODIGY OF OL THEN IT GOES BACK TO BREAKS THEN NO BREAKS.

JUST WONDER WHAT IT COULD BE

Not if you have a good ground through the plug. You should never trust the hitch to make ground anyway. That will never work.

Two different things here.

1) You can pull the breakaway if you just want to check that the brakes on the trailer function. This is assuming that your battery and associated breakaway wiring is in good order.

2) If you want to test whether or not the brakes work with the truck brake control, the trailer does not need to be hitched to the truck, just plugged in, if you have a good ground through your trailer plug. If the brakes won't work when plugged in, but do work when hitched up, then you need to look into making a better ground through your plug. Like Turbo Thom said, you don't want to rely on making your ground through the trailer hitch as it's not always reliable (grease on surfaces, rust, etc will limit the efficiency).

If you are saying that you have Brakes only intermittently, that your controller reports brakes/no brakes when you move;

<IF I MOVE THE TRUCK ANY AT ALL I GET A READING FROM MY PRODIGY OF OL THEN IT GOES BACK TO BREAKS THEN NO BREAKS. >

You may have a short in the wiring or a bad magnet. Most common place for frayed/worn wiring is inside the drum, when you move the wheel, the magnet/wiring moves slightly creating a short/no short condition.

If you connect the umbilical to the truck, jack up each wheel on the trailer and spin them you may find the short, otherwise you will need to pull each drum and inspect the wiring closely.

If you were saying something else; Well . . )*&%$^%$&()(**)

No brakes on trailer ?

Most brakes only work when moving , if you pull forward and use the manual lever to apply the brakes that will tell you if they are working . The magnets pull the lever with them and turn with the drum to apply the brake the springs return the brakes to neutral position . Do not pull the brake a way with the cord plugged in to the truck or you could fry the controller . Read the instructions ,if you do not have them ,send E-Mail to the maker of your controller . Try www.nameofyourcontroler.com and see if that works Clean all connections male and female . Hope this helps Ron Bissett In Metro Louisville KY :-{} :) P. S that www.is just for show not go.
