Relief!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

An interesting concept a friend passed along, from another website:

Some people drag a grounding strap to dissipate static electricity. This is useful to prevent getting zapped when leaving the vehicle, etc.

It was suggested that eliminating the static "charge" would keep dust/pollen from "clinging" to the paint (especially helpful with black vehicles).

Very obscure thought, but it just might have some merrit.

Any thoughts... rip away!

It looks cool too!!

What size strap?

1/16" x 1. 5" x (??) Would depend on 2wd-4wd and mounting. .

Wonder if it might work,, but then when it storms, you could get zapped by lightning

i doubt it. if your car gets zapped by lightning, it is not the rubber on the tires that keeps you from being zapped, it is the steel chassis that you are in. the tires pop and deflate leaving the rim in contact with the ground and even if it doesn't, the tires in a lightning storm are usually wet from the rain and it will go down that path. i've seen them straps on ricers. i think they look real cheezey when visiable from the front bumper [how does mounting it to plastic help?] now if it were mounted under vehicle say under the diff pumpkin sorta hidden it would be accecptable

Static electricity discharge has been done for years on airplanes. In the 50's and 60's people used to have static straps hanging under cars, I haven't seen any lately. Static straps do work well for eliminating the static charge and thus the shock when you open the door. Another claim is they help minimize fatige on long trips.

Back in the 50's 'n 60's all the fuel delivery vehicles had a grounding strap (sometimes just plain old chain). You'd see them sparking as they went down the gravel roads at night.

I think someone once tried to say that you could prevent radar from seeing you if you had the vehicle grounded well enough too! I never tried it though.

if your vehicle is moving fast enough, the cop shooting the radar will not see you:-laf

I changed a tire on a bucket truck a few months ago and found out just cause a tire is made of rubber doesn't mean juice won't go through it. The guys were using the bumper winch when a energized line got into the winch cable, juice went to ground through the steel cords and ripped the tire apart:eek: ... Doug

Where can you get a ground strap??

I really dont feel like using a chain, but would not mind having a strap like some of the gas trucks use... my ride is black, and it stinks having to use the good ol' CALIFORNIA CAR DUSTER every other day! would appreciate some more info!
