Lift pump crapped out??

Anybody else had a growling noise that varies with engine rpm?It almost sounds like a ford power steering pump that is low on oil.

I was having a similar problem maybe... . Mine is more of a " Howling" noise at 60-70 MPH. When you let off the accelerator, it stops. Push back down, and it comes back. Was told by the dealer that this would probably go away with break in... . Not sure if I helped ya.

jackprince,

I think you will get some responce if you complete your truck sig information ( year, trans, gearing, etc. ) Also more detail as to when this growl takes place. Is it when engine is cold or hot, or both. My truck will have a sound similar to what you discribe when first started and driven when cold. It is the fan for cooling the radiator. The sound dissapears after about a city block. Then when the engine is hot and your at a stop light the fan will kick in to cool your engine and will remain on for maybe a couple hundred feet and then turn off again as air flow is restored to your radiator. Hope this helps.

Do you have a six speed? Mine growls when driving slow in 1st and 2nd. Especially when idling through a parking lot. It could be the radiator fan, they are noisy when you turn the AC on or when the motor gets hot.

Sometimes when taking off from a stop I can hear my fan pushing air. I guess that could be called a "growling".

Might be the Power Steering hose TSB vibration mine kind of growled. That is a big weight they put on it DC must of seen something moving alot under there to add such a large weight. If you haven't done the TSB for the 2100RPM drone it might be worth a trip to the dealer.

I'm pretty sure its not the fan. But i think its getting worse because today i could hear it just sitting there idling. I noticed it first in low gear going down hill steep enough that it was picking up speed without any throttle about 1200 rpm or so. It is a six speed 3500 srw HO quad cab. I'm not sure how to do a sig or i would if it makes it any easier. I looked today and the water pump has lots of brown streaks around it but i couldn't tell if thats where the noise is coming from.

Make sure you have fluid in your power steering reservoir and your radiator overflow bottle. If either is low, it could be a sign. You can enter your truck sig by going into your user control panel and then click on edit profile. Read through each topic you'll see where to enter your profile.

Also be sure to enter your location... there might be another member close by who could take a listen and give a better opinion!

If it sounds like a Ford PS pump, then maybe it is your PS pump... I second wanderson's suggestion to check these fluids.

I checked the power steering fluid and it was OK. I had the hood up listening to it today and it didn't sound like it was near the power steering pump. More like it was in the center or on the alternator side to me.

I think id rather deal with the wifes noise than the trucks. Just get a big stick and tell her you aren't afraid to use it and that should keep her quiet. :)

I get a growling noise from my 6 SPD. in all gears when not under any load and idling around say a parking lot. DC says it might be excessive but wont hurt any thing only annoying. They had it for two weeks, new clutch disc and Trans. end play checked. 04. 5 600 6 spd. low mpg.

Oh yeah. I'll wait here while you go tell her that. You'll probably come back wearing that stick like a tail!

ON MY O3 SRW IT MADE A GROWLING NOISE EVEN AT IDLE LIKE YOU DESCRIBED. IT WAS THE POWER STEERING PUMP IT TOOK A WHILE TO GET DC TO WARRANTY BECAUSE THEY SAID THAT THE PUMP WAS IN SPEC. growling TO ME IS NOT IN SPEC I GUESS AFTER 2 MONTHS OF HOUNDING MY DEALER FINALLY GAVE IN AND REPLACED IT NO GROWLING ANYMORE. :)
