I was wondering what everyone thinks about the gsk is a 3k sufficient, or does anyone recommend the 4k. also any info on doing the install would be great.

Hi CWinslow,

Welcome to TDR. here is a link to PDR and the GSK instructions, http://www.piersdiesel.com/TechGSK12V.htm . I decided on the 3k kit and it is still one of my favorite bombs Oo. (2nd to DTT). The 4k kit requires valve spring replacement, but it has it's advantages for drag racing or sled pulling or just more fueled rpm. some of the 4k guys may have to chime in with their thoughts. For the every day driver that my wife drives for anger management :-laf i stayed with the 3k kit ;) . Have you tackled the KDP yet? what kind of EGT's are you seeing with all that fuel?

Dave

I guess it kind of depends what you are going to do with the truck. The 4k is nice for the higher end fueling, sled pulling/drag racing fun street driving. If you ever run an exhaust brake it makes sense to get the 4k since you have to change the exhaust valve springs anyway. So if you don't mind paying and doing the 60lb valve springs I would go with the 4k.

What plate were you running when you did the DTT? I have a TST #6 and while talking to Shanti this week about a transmission she mentioned a 3K GSK upgrade would be good with the transmission. I have read the #6 is not too good with a GSK. Do you think the transmission upgrade might make it work OK? I am not really looking for much more power, but the ability to turn around 3k would help me towing I think.

The Gsk w the dtt is a great combo I have done many of these. It improves the drivability greatly. Be aware that at high rpm towing you may not have enough air to get the job done properly :)

Bob

I run a #4 plate, which is kind of hot on the top end, especially towing. But i just play with my truck and only tow short distances on occasion (mostly to prove "i can move that") :D . the #10 seems more popluar and works well with the GSK also. It seems like these go hand in hand, you enjoy the GSK more with the DTT :) and you enjoy the DTT more with the GSK :-laf . If i were you and i was going to work the truck (towing) i would go with the #10 and the 3k kit, much more controllable EGT's than the #4 plate has and very tuneable. My understanding is, the other plates tend to defuel more on top and that is why they don't work as well with the GSK's. If you decide to switch plates, TST will take your #6 on trade for $50 on whichever plate you choose. TST is really cool letting us "tune" our trucks like this.

the 4k kit DOES NOT REQUIRE valvesprings... it only requires them if you want to rev the engine past 3400rpm.

I would suggest buying a 4k... you can install it as a 3k, and if you want to upgrade later, you can just pop the 4k springs in there. or if you've got a pre 96 pump, a 4k will let you rev to about 3400rpm

Forrest <-- had a 4k GSK on my 97 for about 100k miles and still had stock valvesprings on it when I sold it at 245k miles :)

I ordered a 3K kit from Rip and it came with the little inner spring to make it a 4K kit (minus the valve springs of course). I bet you can guess what I'm running... Just don't go over 3,400 rpm and you'll be fine (if it's an auto it'll be hard to do on its own anyway unless you purposely drop it into 1st).

well it seems to be a little bit of a mixed opinion i think i will probalby run the 3k just for the fact that i intend on selling this tank, and buying a single cab.

Is there any adjustment to the gov springs? I notice some trucks hit at 2400+/- & others will go nearly 2800rpm??? Thanks!

The 180+ pumps like to rev higher than the 160/175 pumps as built.

It isnt worth the effort to adjust the stock springs to gain any usable rpm.

I have read the #6 is not too good with a GSK.

Hogg wash, put the GSK in with the #6 and do the Gov arm adjustment as per Piers's web site and it will rock.

Jim

I put the 4k in my 95 and am very happy with it. The truck was defueling at around 2200 before and now can hit 3k with little effort. ;)

Are you using the 3 or 4K GSK? I only want about 3000 rpm for towing.

It is all in yor right foot ;) ,Just don't loan your truck out anymore :-laf :-laf The early pumps can use more, the later pumps the 3k is plenty.

My problem is the wife. She can't resist smoking a Power Choke! Troopers down here use about anything unmarked now. She may jump on the wrong truck one day!

LOL just tell them that the trooper raced her... . They can't break the law in order to bate you... :)

I donno about that... . Chicago they do all the time!

I had a Blacked out Camaro mess with me one time when I was in Tech school. I had a 91 Ford Nite (lightining motor, official lightning came out in 92, short box, reg cab) that I took to the strip, ran a 16. 1 and still had the numbers in the window... .

Pretty obvious target... . and I didn't take the bait!

Good thing too! While he was messin with me, on the 3 lane, a car blew by us... ya... the lights came on and he took off!
