Guage Mounting Location

I'm looking to buy a set of guages for the truck soon and am having a tough time making my mind up as to where I want to mount em. I have narrowed it down to either the 3 guage A-pillar mount or the cubby hole mount. My problem is I use the grab handle to get into the truck and I put stuff in the cubby hole. Just looking for feedback from people who have one or the other and how inconvenient it is to be without a grab handle or the cubby hole.

I think it would be tough looking down at the gauges while driving. Pillar works great , use steering wheel to get in truck. I have a 3" lift on my 2wd truck ,my employee gruts getting in ,i tell him to lose some weight.

I have both A-pillar and cubby hole mounts. I use the steering wheel in lieu of the absent grab handle.



I like the cubby hole mount because it looks almost perfectly factory. I dislike the cubby hole mount because as p-Bar points out you have to look down and away from the road to check it. As a result, I don't check those gauges as often as I should.

A pillar mount

I have three gauges in the A-pillar. My wife who drives the truck too is 5'4" and has no problem just grabbing the wheel. It does take a bit of time to get used to the bigger blind spot, but it looks really good, you can see every gauge and the road easily. In retrospect, I maybe should have used the cubby mount since I added the Quad, nothing seems to stay in the cubby anyway, it all flys into the backseat. :-laf

Good info thanks. Not taking my eyes off the road when looking at the guages was the main reason for the A-pillar besides it looks tough . I'm gonna start using the steering wheel to climb into the truck instead of the grab handle and see how that goes. Shouldn't be too bad with the steps. Thanks again for the info. Mike

Don't know how Dodges will hold up to constant yanking sideways on the wheel, but older Chevys' tilt mechanisms loosened up when the wheel was used as a grab handle to get in. Just some food for thought.



Just curious, why aren't the dash pods popular? Is it simply cosmetic or are there some functional issues, like routing the wiring? It looks like they put the gauges closer to your line of sight and appear to only block your view of the hood. Then you keep the handle and the cubby.

Two "Frog Eyes" on the steering wheel pod (EGT & Pyro) and fuel pressure on an SRT-10 pillar. Kept the grab handle.

Losing my Grab-Handle was one of my biggest worries when considering my A-Pillar set-up, and I was getting ready to give you some words of wisdom on putting them there... because I LOVE the visibality(sp?)

... but then I read the steering wheel comments, and all of the sudden, couldn't remember how I get in my own truck!! LOL...

So, I put on my shoes and went outside to see, because I used to totally rely on my grab-handle to get in, and my girlfriend too, who is 5'4".

(I'm also Obsessive-Compulsive, so this would have bugged me all night if I just didn't give in and go see)

... So...

Open the door, left hand goes on the inside door-handle, right foot on step, right hand on the top of the steering wheel (just for balance... minimal pressure on it) left foot on step, then in ya go!!!

Hope this helps... ZoLoft has helped me, but apparently I still have my moments!... LOL...

I am really liking my pod above the mirror.

I had the SRT-10 A pillar with a SPA dual gauge in that and it was pretty good- keeping the handle was a plus.



After moving them above the mirror I discovered 2 things:

1) The angle the gauge face is now at is a big improvement over the A pillar but this pertains to just the SPA dual gauge as they want a specific angle that makes the LCD more crisp.



2) My pillar is more clean and less distracting. I thought is was ok having a gauge there then one day I was stopped for traffic. . not in an intersection but on a street with a crosswalk that was in front of me.



Traffic started to move so I took a quick look to the right and then left for pedestrians, while moving my eyes to the left I snapped a split second look at the trans temp. out of habit and it was just long enough to let a small person step behind the A pillar crossing from the left.

When I looked the rest of the way to the left no one was there and I hit the gas



I know now it was dumb taking a peek at the gauge at that moment.

I didn't hit the person cuz I hit the brake just about as quick when I realized someone was in front of me.



The A pillar is ok IMO, you just gotta not do that!

... I am really liking my pod above the mirror... .

Had the "two hole" "A" pillar mount in my 2001, but went with the windshield pod (over the mirror) with the 2005. It is a "two hole" model that has the Westach Boost/EGT dual gauge and a FP gauge.



I like the windshield gauges better then the "A" pillar. Less clutter, still have my grab bar, and very easy to read gauges while on the move. The install is a little bit more work as you have to trim the pod for the 2005 models and getting it to fit takes a little more fudging then the "A" pillar pod. Getting the wires and stuff up into the headliner is a little more work, but it all goes in there. The only problem I had was not getting the velcro sticky tape on correctly the first time then having to glue it in place. Once you remove it, it won't stick the second time.



All in all it was a worthwhile project and it works for me...

Check out the over the rear view mirror on the swidnshiled mounts that we have. They are availabel in2,3 or 4 gauge styles and fit up next to the hedaliner. Leaves the grab handle and cubby box stock.

3 gage mount on top of the dash

I like the Geno's 3 gage mount on top of the dash. Very close to line of sight while driving and very visible and doesn't obstruct anything. Ken Irwin

I used the dual column for fuel and boost and the single A-pillar mount for EGT (which kept the grab handle). Fuel and boost I use for diagnostic checks, while EGT I look at when pulling hard and it's easier to see on the A-pillar. Also, I have Dipricols and the EGT looks different from the fuel and boost gauges so having EGT away from the other two looks better. That wouldn't be an issue with other brands. The column mount doesn't block anything of importance on the dash with a stick shift, but it might block something on the dash with an automatic (like maybe the gear selector readout?).

The pod is not listed on their site but they can get it. You have to call them.

Another vote for the over the mirror mount. Got mine (3 gauge) from Geno's and have had nothing but good comments. I like the location, still have my cubby nd my handle.
