Engine/Transmission (1994 - 1998) Guages,tach,check eng, alt. erratic

My brother has a 97 diesel with about 140k on it. Yesterday the Guages,tach,chk eng light started getting very erratic. He says just flashing pegging and all that stuff. I was wondering if anyone else has had that happen to them. He lives in Indiana and I am in Idaho so I can't help him much. Thanks - Dean M

I had this happen on a '93 and it ended up being two sensors, I forget exactly what the tech term is but one was on the front at the crank nose and the other was on the trans at the speedometer pick up. Hope this helps out.

Happened to me too, it was the crank position sensor. Check its 3 wire connector just under the top radiator hose for a good clean connection. The CPS drives the tach and tells the charging system its ok to charge.
