Guam

I just found out that I'm going to Guam for 2 years. A tiny Island in the Pacific that is 30 miles X 8 miles with a 45mph speed limit. I just bought this truck in October. Dealer offered to trade me out of it even up (zero dollars) for an identical truck to mine except its a brand new 2011 with a 5. 7 Hemi. I'm tempted to take him up on it. I'm worried that 2 years of short trips and never being able to drive the truck at highway speed will kill that DPF since it won't get a chance to regen. For my lifestyle and needs, I really don't need the diesel and I think the hemi would pull my trailer just fine.



What do you guys think... should I take the Cummins to Guam or just get the Hemi?

Take the cummins, a delete pipe and DPF-r with you to Guam.
No emissions testing, no dealership, no problem. Just put the DPF back on before you ship it home. When it goes through customs, they won't notice the missing emissions equipment.
If the delete scares you, put the cummins in a storage shed, and buy an island car and beat the crap out of it.

Sure beats Shemya, where there is a beautiful girl behind every tree ... Guam is much larger and warmer... and it has a 20MPH faster speed limit. You'll love it!

Whatever you take you may want to find a good company to rustproof the vehicle. In the early '70s I remember seeing several new cars, less than a year old that were rusted all along the lower body panels. My boss had a gorgeous '70 red Chevelle SS that he had Ziebart corrosion proof, and had them also treat the paint. It stayed shiny and rust free for his tour.

Whew, two years on Guam! I've been there a number of times but was fortunate never to spend any time there. It beats two years at sea but is not exactly an island paradise.

I think I would keep the truck you have, remove and store the DPF, and disable the EGR then restore both when you move to your next assignment. Corrosion protection would be a good idea as Bruce suggested.

You won't put any miles on your Ram while you're there and can have it paid for when you get your next assignment and opportunity to go RVing again. Your next assignment might allow you and your family a cross country RVing excursion from the west coast to your destination. A hemi wouldn' be much fun roaring up the grades headed east at 4000 rpm with family and trailer.

The more I think about it the more I think I'll just park it in the garage at my home up North and leave the camper in the driveway for the 2 years and have my brother or dad start it up and drive it once a week. It's paid for anyway. Only 2 more years and we will be retired from the AF! I can't wait!! Oo.



I'll just get an Island car while we're there. If it's good enough, will bring it back with us and give it to my son who will be turning 16 anyway around that time.
