Stuck in 5th Gear

Thought I heard a nice pleasant turbo whine, and then I realized it was the tailshaft bearing going out for the third time in my 518 Torqueflite! I've GOT to figure a way to get an adequate oil supply to that bearing! You'd think Mother MOPAR would help people out with this faulty design, but NOOOOOO!

I'm probably better off with the gas RAM anyway. It's got cruise control. I wouldn't have the air working in my Cummins RAM because I haven't finished the intercooler install yet. Gas mileage with the 2000 is 14mpg, fuel mileage with the 89 is 16mpg; and gas is a lot cheaper than diesel right now. The biggest downside is that I can't carry the Lance with the 2000 'cause it's a half-ton and doesn't have tie down bars. I'd much prefer sleepin in the Lance than at relatives' houses!

Hi Jsimpson.

I'm just guessing here but if the bearing is failing from lack of oil it may be your bushing is not being properly installed.

If the oil hole in it has to line up with another in the housing it could be this isn't happening.

I have seen this happen on two engines I had rebuilt.

Auto transmissions need a tremendous amount of care during rebuild-one tiny check ball missing or a little dirt and there will be problems.

I wish you sucess in finding a PERMANENT solution.
