I was just reading the May/June issue of MOPAR and came across the H/D Extended life 48re remans through Dodge, thought it was interesting. .

Here are some features I read about:

  • Improved timing and flow reduces converter overheating, and decreases the occurrence of TCC shudder
  • Heavy duty throttle valve kit restores throttle valve control so the transmission will not hang in gears as long or be as sensitive to downshifting under load
  • Front servo piston cover designed with an "O" ring to insure hydraulic seal of direct clutch oil
  • Intermediate shaft plug kit improves lube flow and reduce internal temperatures
  • Upgraded stator support bushing material improves durability
  • High-energy front and rear clutch for increased clutch capacity and firmer shifts
  • Turbine stiffener plate eliminates hub cracking
  • Kevlar reverse band allows for higher torque capacity
  • Billet front cover eliminates converter ballooning

Now available for 03-06's

Looks like DC decided to join the aftermarket trans builders and make some extra money doing what they should have done in the first place.

Does anyone have a part number for this transmission???

Why is it that even though, we are not enginners, and it does not take a mental giant to build it better, or should I say correctly. This is the minumen way this should have been built in the first place. What the hell is a matter with the engineering dept at Dodge? Are they all on their first year on the job after getting the boot at McDonalds ? Super size that R-48!!

That trans runs right around $4500... I saw a part # once but Ill have to do some searching to find it. And I agree, this shoulda been the factory unit instead of an upgrade AFTER you fry the stocker #@$%!

If you could find it, I would greatly appreciate it. My dealer says it does not exist. After my my rebuild, ( 2 months ago ) I am having the same issues that I had before. Tech says most likely the torque converter. I have told them about the heavy duty rebuild, they say not from DC. I would love to show them.

Thanks, Ed

$4500 for a rebuild? For that kind of dough, they ought to sell a new 68re with a dedicated computer.

And suggested retail price for RH103351AC, which is an 03-04 4x4 is $4,991. 67... apparently its meant as an upgrade over the cost of a stock rebuild, so itd be like $8-900 more than the stocker. And its rebuilt by Tracey Industries (whoever they are)

H/D Extended Life 48RE through Dodge

The H/D 48RE P/N is R5103353AD, $ 3. 195. 00 plus installation. I had mine installed in Dec. 07 and love it, towed my 12,500 5th wheel from WA to AZ the after Christmas and I also installed a new PacBrake.

Are you saying the new A/T allows us 04 guys to "retro-fit" an exhaust brake?

I too wonder if any of these HD features are included in my 07 dodge. I do notice the transmission in my 07 is better in every way compared to my 05 cummins but I figured it was the new computer programming.

It's not the engineers, it's the bean counters. The engineers can built a great vehicle, but it'd cost too much. The manufacture is only going built it good enough to sell. That's why I won't buy a Powerstroke or Duramax, same idea, built to sell not last. We here are lucky because we have an engine built by a company that builds it to last not just to sell. Yes, this should be the stock transmission but then the price of the truck would be more and profit margins would be less. So they put in the cheapest thing they can sell. This HD trans is basically an upgrade to what the stocker ought to be with the accompanying cost. The bean counters are the reason boards like this exist. Personally, I'll stick to a DTT. :D
