air tank is leaking. My air horn compressor was coming on everytime I started the truck. I checked it for air leaks and the tank is leaking at one of the mount bolts. Anyone have a suggestion on how to fix it. The tank is steel I thought I'd try silver soldering the crack but I think it will break again as this is a stress point because it's the mount. Any help would be great.

How long have you had the system?

When I first got mine, the tiny, little, cheesy tank they include also leaked, around one of the fittings. I called and they sent me a new one. However, I still wanted a bigger tank so I ended up finding one on the 'Net. Much better tank.

That was a year and a half ago so I don't remember the brand or web site. I think I found it via a Google search.

Not sure its worth trying to fix. Prolly just fail again, like you said. Replace it with a better one.

I love my air horns, but you are right about that tank being too small. I haven't done it yet, but several others mentioned adapting an old fire extinguisher tank or scuba tank. If you can find one cheap, they'd hold plenty of air and still fit along the frame.

The Problem with alot of the tanks is that they rust from the inside. Especially on a truck, you are gonna have condensation. You are better off going to a truck/offroad parts house and find a tank designed for on board air. Good ones will be coated inside and out, and are around $60 for a 3gal.

Common problem with these tanks! I've had two repaired and finally resorted to the above suggestion and bought a GOOD tank from one of the "onboard air" guys. I even thought ahead and installed a moisture trap... ended up getting leaks at the schrader valve. It's always something. Now I have the larger tank and don't mess around with the 12v compressor. Use garage compressor (with air trap). Tight system lasts a looonnnggg time!

I have two old fire extinguishers. They are pretty good size. If you want pm me and i'll send you some photos. They are aluminum so they will not rust.

Thanks for

the replies , all good ideas and I'll start trying to dig something up. We have a Graingers in Henderson NV I'll stop and see them. I did silver solder it today it's holding 125PSI by the little gauge but it won't last. Thanks again. Hey Tony I'll look around first and see whats up.

I have a 5 gallon semi air tank under the bed on the passanger side. It is mounted by bending 2 5/16" stainless allthread and bolting it to the frame. Its solid, wont move, and is rated at 150 psi. I am using hydrolic hoses for air lines and they are rated for 4000 psi. i have no leaks and dont even have a compressor on the truck, just fill off of shop air compresssors.

How many blasts is that good for and how long?

Do you fill at a schrader valve and if so, where is it so access is easy without crawling under the truck?

I have added two big rig air tanks under my bed, used all d. o. t. fittings and air lines. They hold enough air to remove all 4 tires with an impact. I did not get fancy routing a remote fill, just a tank valve directly into each tank. Also have quick connects on both sides for easy access from either side of the truck. Bob

Kev,

I have a 7 gal. portable air tank on my truck for my single 22 inch long Hadley and if you fill it to 125 psi, it will give at least 20 2sec long blasts before the sound level drops from "super loud" to just "real loud. " I have an air compressor at home so no trouble for me to top it off after I use it a few times.

He's what I'm doing if you interested.

I have a 24" Grover that I was powering by a 10gal. air tank in my toolbox. Took up 1/2 of my toolbox!

A buddy of mine liked it so much he had me pick him one up ($35 Big Rig Bone Yard) to put on his truck. Well he wasn't satisfied with just a tank so he got on e-bay and found us two 140psi air compressors normally $150 for $45!

He's already got his tank and pressure cut off switch and got his system installed. Me I'm still lagging behind but very soon I will have a 1/2gal tank and the compressor mounted in my toolbox for my setup. That will take up like a 1/3 of the space of just my old tank.

Just an idea

P. S. Rickson Truck Assecories has 1/2gal tanks for $35, not sure where he got his pressure cut off switch but I'll find out as it was only $20:--)

I get about 20 seconds of full blast from 135psi. I have a standard air compressor female end that sticks up under the hood. I made a male to male adaptor so i just plug an air hose into it. I also have a valve stem to male air hose so i can fill up at gas stations.

Scuba Tanks

Scuba tanks and fire extinguisher tanks are awfully heavy to be used for low pressure storage. However if you pump them to 3000 psi and used the propper regulator to get the pressure down to 135, you could get a lot of horn blowing from one fill. :D
