Archived Half way through changing rear gear oil help please

Hi I was useing a suction device and It broke Its im my driveway can I just take off all the bolts around the pumpkin? and use the same gasket or is there no gasket thank you how hard is it to do that

There's no gasket - just RTV silicone sealant. You'll want to remove the cover anyway to clean off the magnet on the inside. Once the cover is off, jack up one rear wheel, lower it, jack up the other side, and lower it, to drain all the gear lube out of the rear axle. Clean off the diff and the cover real well, put on new sealant, button 'er up and fill to the hole.

"Tighten in criss cross pattern to 30 foot pounds"- thus says the shop manual. I'll be changing my rear fluid next week after I do a brake job this weekend with a friend. Good luck.

There is also a "sump" below the ring gear that I recommend cleaning. That is where a lot of stuff lands.



I drilled and tapped a 1/8 pipe tap in the bottom of that for a drain, it's the lowest point. I used an allen head plug so it doesn't stick down. If you opt for this, tap the hole a little at a time and check the plug's fit. If you go too deep you will have a big problem.

I think My dana 80 has one of the bottom bolt holes drilled all the way through so if you pull the bottom right bolt it should drain all the oil from the center section. Mine was pluged with rtv the first 2 times I changed the fluid I found this out the last time I changed it and cleaned out all the holes.
