I got to meet President Reagan! In fact I got to meet 5 (yes 5) U. S. Presidents all at one time. Nixon, Ford, Carter, Reagan and Bush.
They were at President Nixons Library in Yorba Linda California, and I was one of the Marines that got to stand tall along the walk way. It was very cool, I remember calling everyone back home I could think of to tell them. President Nixon shook my hand and said he had the utmost respect for Marines. I later found out that his burial wishes were to have an all Marine burial detail, like he had for his wife Pat when she passed away, but when he passed away, Clinton denied his last request. He said Nixon was Commander in Chief to all service men, and all the services would be represented in the burial detail. That makes sense, but it was the mans last wishes.
If you ever get a chance to see the real Body Bearers for the Marine Corps in action, you would be amazed and impressed and filled with honor. There are only 18 of them total. The Army has over 400 and the Navy and Airforce have over 400 as well. The Marine Body Bearers are out of Washington D. C. , and they put 6 men to a casket, compared to 8 in the other services. They practice with a casket filled with over 1000 ponds in it! Its all very "snap and pop", no vocal commands... its all silent. Before they lower the body to the grave, they slowly (picture this in your head, its amazing) raise the casket into the air about head height and hold it there in a show of respect. They slowly lower it back down and place it where it needs to go from there. Very impressive and respectful. I see why Nixon wanted that for his wife and his own funeral.
Later I got to meet President Clinton in Hawaii. I remember Hilary telling a group of Marines how she wanted to join up before she went off to college

Never believed anything that woman ever said after that... not that I put too much stock into what she had to say before that either.
