Happy 2008 everyone!

I'm very curious if anyone has had any success eliminating the ticking/tapping engine noise - if you have it. From all the reading I've done, there appear to be a few possible causes:

1) Piston installed wrong causing it to bang into the oil jet.

2) CP3 not properly aligned.

3) One of several possible problems with an injector (carbon, worn, etc. ).

4) Dropped valve (??).

5) Bent push rod.

I don't have any fuel in my oil, I consistently get just over 20 MPG, and my truck always fires right up. I've used a stethascope and my CP3 doesn't make any noise. The sound I'm chasing is associated with either cylinder 1 or 3. Both make more noise than the others.

I'm wondering if 1, 4, or 5 would have symptoms other than the ticking/tapping noise.

My clicking/tapping was cured with new injectors... truck is as quiet as new now.

Same as Steved. My engine is actually much quieter than when it was new. I changed all the injectors and crossover tubes.

All three of my trucks made strange tapping, knocking, ticking noises. They are the kinds of noises you never would have heard in an older engine. I would not be concerned in the least unless it starts knocking, and I really mean knocking. Just drive it until there are some real symptoms.

Mine has had noises for a very long time. I suspected pretty much everything and found nothing. I feel very confident in saying that sag2 is correct. I turned over 193K today and no ticking has ever been found. Heard, but not found. Ignore it until it refuses to be ignored.

I agree to just ignore most soft noises. A loud rat-tat-tat upon acceleration indicates a malfunctioning injector. Otherwise, it's just a slight discrepancy in the pilot injection, or a slight valve lash difference.

Also, each cylinder makes a slightly different knocking sound than the next, due to its location in the block.

Some trucks have perfectly balanced pilot injection, or more retarded timing than other trucks (due to manufacturing tolerances in crankshaft and sensor/cover location), which makes them quieter.

I just remembered, my 03 started to develop a loud rattle at idle. It took me a few weeks to find out about the TSB calling for replacing the clutch disk. I took it to the dealer, and with the manager listening, I tried to duplicate the noise, and after depressing the clutch once, it got quiet. I felt like a fool, but it turns out that the noise had disappeared on its own. I bet if DC had known that the clutch noise would disappear on its own, they never would have redesigned the disc, or at least never issued the TSB.

Yeah, I'm so doing my injectors before turbo. My noises come, go, quiter, louder with temperature as well. I'm suspecting some roughness in the idle and what not has to do with my injectors getting old. Almost 96,000 miles now.

  1. The musical chairs-like noises must be an "04. 5 thing"
  2. OLD???? :-laf#@$%!:{:-laf;)

My 04. 5 would make a different noise everyday... the valvetrain noise was a pretty consistent thing.

Its sad when the 3rd gen trucks have "old injectors" at miles approaching 150k...

Well, over 400hp since 32,000 miles. over 460hp since around 60,000 miles. and over 500hp since 70,000 miles. Real fuel filter and pump since 70,000 miles-ish as well.

I think this truck falls into the old category when you take into the hp and abuse numbers.

Mine was stock with real filters from 60k... :{

Not to turn the attitude of this thread too much, but apparently my "real" filters have done a better job than your "real" filters. Never anything than either WIX or Fleetgaurd stock type fuel filters in mine.

Yeah but has it towed anything? :-laf :-{}
