In the last 52,700 miles I have only worn an average of 49 thousandths of off the front pads.
I change winter/summer tires spring and fall. Every time I have the fronts off, I clean and lube the front brakes. This includes...
..... cleaning the mounting pins (and replacing the "rubber" inserts every other time) and re-lubing with "Sil-glyde" lube from the squeeze tube.
..... "Peeling" back the dust cover to the caliper, and adding "brake cylinder assembly lube" into the void. Then I open the bleed screw and "collapse" the "puck" back into the caliper. It is very important not to force the "old" brake fluid back into the lines.
..... Scraping, filing, sanding the "flat metal surfaces" (I don't know what they are called) that the caliper "butts up against and "hopefully" slides in and out on. They are a fairly coarse machining job from the factory. I have heard others say there's were actually a taperd fit, but I do not have that problem. I then use "anti-seize" on both surfaces before re installing.
I have read a lot of reports of brake problems and wanted to share a good story.
"Full disclosure" requires that I mention I have an exhaust brake and use it frequently. Preventive maintenance has always been a big item for me.
