Hard on the transmission?

How hard is in on the truck if I am going to race somebody to throw it in 4 wheel and pre load the gas pedal just a little before the light turns green? Do you lose much power and speed going 4 wheel drive compared to 2 wheel?

You'll get off the line way quicker. I used to spool it up to about 15psi before I left in 4HI, then shift to 2HI after the 1-2 shift of the trans.

Will it come out of 4HI into 2HI while I’m still accelerating?

The transfer case will, even though the front hubs will stay locked until you back off the throttle. At that point, the front DS will still spin, but you are turning the gear in the TC that is not connected to the power.
