I have a friend with a '02 dually, six speed that is hard to start after it sits for 3-4 hours. He has a programmer. It is a great big "G" with a bunch of wires coming out of it. It seems to me that the prime on the injection pump is bleeding down. At least that is the diagnosis that I would give it if it was a 12v. 24v's are not my strong suit although I am familiar with the dangers of no fuel to the VP, the occasional 53 block crack, etc. I have talked him into letting me put a fuel pressure gage on it to avert disaster but it is not installed yet. However, I don't think this is a "lack of fuel pressure" related problem. Any advice is much appreciated before I sink my teeth into this issue. Thanks from a 24v newbie.

Look for any "wetness" around the injector tubes. I had that problem and found #6 wasn't torqued down enough.

If that looks OK check the return line from the VP.
 
Could be the beginning of the end for his VP44. Hard starts are one of the symptoms. Also, check all of the lines leading to the pump to make sure they are tight.

Check the connection of the "big plug" on the back of the VP.



You are going to have to get a fuel pressure reading of some sort. Even if it is with a temporary gauge connected to the schrader at the VP.



Does he have the factory lift pump set up? Is the pump running when the starter is bumped? How does the LP pump sound? When was the last time he replaced the fuel filter?



This is where I would start. IMO. Rule out the obvious first.
 
Sounds like the overflow valve might be stuck open. I don't know if they can be check or not but you can pull it and take a look. It's the banjo bolt right in front of the inlet line.

The main cause of the problem has manifested itself finally... leaking injector lines. When we have this fixed then we'll double check pressure and get gages installed. I really appreciate the replies.
