when my truck is warm it takes longer to start what might be the problem? It just started to do it also what is the highest temp on the egt I should let it go? probe is at the manifold. I asked this in a earlier post but got no responce thanks for any imput

The recommended max sustained EGT with the probe in the mainfold by Cummins is 1250*. I live by it, but you will find many that don't pay it much attention and push a lot harder.

On my '99, I had a hard start when warm condition. Turned out to be the VP44.

You are welcome 911. I don't mind sharing my experiences. I ran my VP for a long time before it got really bad (10+ seconds turning over before it would fire). I carried it to a local diesel shop, the tested and said it was the pump. I figured it was. Truck had 136,000 when I gave up and had the pump replaced. The symptoms started at 84,000 after a dead lift pump change out by the dealer. I complained multiple times about the hard start when warm to the dealer, but to no avail. So I drove it until I was afraid that it would leave me stranded. Bit the bullet and $1500 later, new pump installed and no more problems. The truck is still running with over 178,000 on it now.

Since you have a 2001, you can get any codes that are set in the ECM to display in the odometer window. To do this, turn the ignition on-off-on-off-on fast enough that the gauge cluster does not show up each time. Leave the key on the third time and was the odo window. It will show any codes set and end with pdone. Make note of any codes displayed and you can ask about them here and find out what they mean. I believe the injection pump timing failure code is 0216 or 0214. I think it is 0216. If you have the injection pump timing error code, then the pump is bad... at least it has been in every instance that I have seen the code. Mine was a '99, so it would not show the codes in the odo window. When I carried mine to the shop, they checked the codes and there were none, but the VP44 was still bad.

Good luck. :)
