HELP!!

Hard Starting

What rpm does your truck idle at in gear with the a/c on, it should be at 850rpm. If your idle is slow it will crank alittle bit before starting, try pushing down on the gas pedal next time you start to see if it starts any faster. :p

Check idle rpm like nfox said. Also check your gov arm position to cam plate. Is your afc moved forward?Have you adjusted your pre-boost screw on the rear of your afc?Hope this helps. :)

gov arm is OK

what should the Idle be in park? (auto trans) the Idle now is 880 in park/neutral

afc is fwd all the way #10 is a little back from stock ( to limit the egt for drivers who dont have a clue)

if I touch the throttle even 1/8 of an inch it starts right up

I guess I will set the idle to 850 in drive and see

Thanks Again Guys

If you have to touch the throttle to get it to start and the idle speed is fine then your governor springs are a click or two too tight.

Back off them one click each, reset your idle and see if that fixes the problem.

Check the rubber boot on the fuel solenoid.

Mine was acting up gradually for awhile. You would have to crank forever and it would hit and start and then finally, it would not start at all.

Pulled the solenoid off and the boot had deteriated and was wrapped up in the spring which would keep it some times from engaging all the was.

yep I changed the overflow when I did the fuel lines

I set the gsk to 2 clicks then 3 clicks back to 2

and today I set the idle to 1000 in park (drops one tick in drive)

the truck starts good now we will see when it gets cold

Less than spec rack travel in the injection pump, will cause lower fueling and harder starting too. Usually a bit more than oe idle makes it happy, with a good starter and batteries.

Good luck.

My 97 does the same. Always a couple crank start unless I give it a bit of fuel. Turned up the idle and it starts much better. I noticed the same quick start when the gov springs were set a click tighter, too.

Winter now and set idle WAY down adn back to giving it fuel to start faster. Tight converter, winter, and fast idle don't blend well.
