Engine/Transmission (1994 - 1998) Hard Starting Issues

1998 12V 5spd 4X4



I have been having issues with starting of late, and am almost at my wits end.

Problem; Try to start and just hear the fuel solenoid clicking (pulling in) but will not turn over, does not do this all of the time.

If I rotate key from run to start and then cycle 3-4times quickly between run and start (without actually going back to run) truck will usually start.



To date I have installed new starter, new fuel shut-off relay, new diode/soleniod saver and jumpered the clutch switch.



Problem seems to be with the iginition switch/key tumbler assembly but I am not sure, and the dealer wants a small fortune for these.



Can anyone think of anything I may be over-looking?

Don't forget to check the obvious, battery and or cables. Ignition switch is reasonable and available from NAPA if that is your problem.

I will be installing new key/tumbler set and ignition switch tonight that I ordered through Lordco parts (at 1/4 the dealer cost) and same quality.



Yes, I did go through all connections (batteries, starter & harnesses) but will do it again after new parts are in.



I think what scared me the most was my wife's comment, "maybe it's time to look for a new truck... " (gotta love that woman).

Starter relay could be acting up if the engine is not turning over (starter not spinning ).

Starter is only 3 weeks old and the problem was present on the old starter, in other words, the old one was not the problem and I could have saved the money.

Starter Relay is in the Power Distribution Center not on the starter.
