Hard starting w/Edge EZ

It's been a curious thing ... My 2003 HO, which has 58,000 total miles on it, has had an Edge EZ on it for the last 30,000 miles or so. Recently, the engine has been hard to start, i. e. , it turns over for 5 or 6 seconds before it finally fires. I mentioned it to my friendly service writer (who knew I had the Edge) and said I might bring it in for a check up. He "suggested" I take the Edge off before I did because, if one of the mechanics saw it hooked up, he would report it to DC and that would vacate my extended warranty. So I pulled it off and - voila! - the truck starts perfectly. Clearly, the problem was with the Edge unit, but I wonder what caused it. Should I contact Edge? It's been in the truck awhile, but gee whiz, there's not much to go wrong with these things, is there?



I will miss having it because it really "woke up" the engine. But right now I don't intend putting it back in. The engine really has enough power power stock for most applications.

My truck does have an occasional long crank. It does it more often when I shut the truck off to do something that will take usually a couple min. (ex. run inside the bank) it did it even before I put on my ez. IT never really did it enough to cause concern. So I thought nothing of it.



Does it work fine with the ez off everytime? or is it more intermittent?



Maybe edge has some answers. I head their service is pretty good!

It would start fine when cold, then after it warmed up awhile and was stopped, it would sometimes take 8 or 10 seconds as though a non-existent carburetor was flooded. It didn't do this immediately after the Edge was installed, but interestingly, now that the Edge has been removed, the stock engine fires right up a second or two after the starter is engaged. Hard to argue with what's going on now, although if I'd know it was going to do this I would have saved myself the cost of the box.

How long ago did you buy your ez? they have a 2 year warranty on them. MAybe try calling up edge and see what they have to say. Did your mechanic ever find anything wrong when you took it in for service?

Mobius1, I have to say thanks. I contacted Edge by email and they asked for date of manufacture, which was 25 months ago (one month out of warranty). But because I purchased the EZ from ATS Diesel 20 months ago, they sent me a replacement no questions asked after I provided proof of purchase. Can't ask for better service than that. I haven't installed the new module yet, but I wanted to say thanks for the suggestion, and thanks to Edge for being responsive.



I have to also say that I should not forget to take the boost elbow AND the module out when the truck goes to the dealer for service. The boost elbow would void a warranty just as quick as the module.

Glad that everything worked out ok for you. And what is this boost elbow that you speak of? My ez didn't come with one. Maybe thats because your truck is an 03 and mine is 05. I think that 03 ez's work a little different that the 04. 5-05 do.

The boost elbow comes with the module. In addition to keeping EGTs down a bit, I think it keeps the wastegate open so you can have a few more inches of boost. However, the module works with or without the boost elbow.



I'm very pleased with the EZ, although it's not a huge increase in power (70 HP + 220 lb-ft of torque). You just gotta remember that it'll void your warranty if the dealer finds it. Other than that, it's a great addition for not much cost. It really woke up my truck.



I disagee with bombing engines to the max unless you've got plenty of money to spend and don't care what happens to 'em. I expect my truck to last me hundreds of thousands of miles. I also pay attention to what Robert Patton has to say about some of these kits. He'd say go ahead as long as you know what you're doing and what the risks are. Great fun but it can cost in the long run.

Yah, I should have known I had it backwards. Thanks for pointing that out. Since I don't tow heavy I might just take it out and then I won't have to worry about the dealer finding it.
